Thank you. I was looking for some discussion here, but everyone was just spouting off about patents, and it being "illegal", which isn't the case. OpenAFS has a similar license incompatibility, yet it's still very widely used.

> If prevailing wisdom was that unless you bought some $40 item for your car, it could easily be stolen, you'd probably buy it right? Oh, you mean "The Club", which slows down a car thief by about 10 seconds ;)

Yeah, but since /opt isn't always created by default on all systems, I don't think it's that big a deal. You can almost always count on /usr/local being there. As long as they don't go and dump stuff in /{bin,lib} or /usr/{bin,lib}.

If he did, he would risk learning why things are the way they are. There's definitely room for improvement, but modern languages have evolved this way for a reason. If he wants his own bloated DSL, then best of luck; but I probably don't wa

>* Your code tries to install into /opt or /usr/local [ +10 points of FAIL ] I think this one bothered me the most. `/usr/local` is the correct default location for user installed software, per the "Filesystem Hierarchy Standard". If

Still, an article about random matricies and the Riemann hypothesis should not need to explain what a prime number is. I found that more insulting that the lack of any real information.

No, the problem is people trying to validate email addresses when they shouldn't. Similar to the credit card name example in TFA, you're trying to save a call to the MTA, when in reality, a user that doesn't want to be contacted will enter

"Praise them equally for failing, if they worked hard, learned something, and are willing to keep trying." I Agree. I guess I was lucky in this regard - I learned to love failing, and saw it as a challenge. One of my favorite pastimes, ches

Isn't hindsight grand. I never had to study, take notes (or write anything down for that matter), or do homework to get through highschool. College wasn't too difficult, but it was too much of the same, and I couldn't keep with the grind. &

UTF-\d is not unicode. Unicode isn't an encoding, it's the decoded representation of a character encoding. [edit] clarified example >>> s = u'\xa5' # shiftjis decoding of \ >>> print s.encode('shiftjis'

Python 3 doesn't use an internal encoding, it uses unicode. Python 2 can use unicode strings if you specify them. I'm not familiar enough with ruby to comapare the two, but I don't see a problem with how python handles it. You sometimes nee

I think that the current consensus is that unladen-swallow was aimed at a short term performance boost, while pypy has more ambitious long-term goals. While the CPython branch may be the current "standard", there's no reason that another ru

I would like to note though, that psyco development has been stopped for a couple years, and probably won't continue (unless a new developer thinks there's a future and takes it over). Further development is going into pypy. Also, it can't
