I've set up something similar with old hardware and pfSense. It supports Multi-WAN and HA failover, and the price is nicer than the custom hardware units (as long as you can find a fast enough unit to run it on).

There are several tricks you can use for DNS failover, but it's not generally regarded as a reliable option. DNS caching has all kinds of awkward gotchas. You could also host a reverse proxy somewhere reliable which just forwards things to

It sounds like they still have several single points of failure. Most obviously the multi-WAN router - I doubt they paid double for a cold or warm spare unit.

It depends how you define "outage". When we had an ADSL line it rarely went down, but regular ping tests along it often showed packet loss.

One advantage not mentioned here is when you need to perform maintenance. Being able to take any single device offline without affecting the service means that you can perform software upgrades or hardware replacements with more flexibility

It wouldn't be quite such a big problem, since well-behaved clients should attempt to use 'home.company.com' before the root 'home'. Regardless of what is possible or allowed by RFCs, that behaviour should discourage TLD holders from tryi

At $108k per domain, that's about $200 million for ICANN.

There was a $108,000 "evaluation fee" per gtld, so that's over 11 million USD in fees.

The services that they're shutting down were all provided for free with no obvious source of significant revenue. If you were paying them and they were making a profit then you might have a better chance.

Why disable the account rather than just notifying them and asking them to change the logo? I had a parody twitter account which was accused of trademark infringement last year. Twitter just asked me to change the logo to make it more clear

Pretty much this. It's only quite recently that many of our business apps are even officially supported on Windows 7, and even then it will involve upgrades and changes to things that are otherwise working. If you don't need to be on the cu

This looks like a precursor to what we can expect with IPv6. A significant minority of users are going to be on old operating systems that can't or won't be upgraded to support IPv6, and servers will have to make the choice about whether to

That's why users haven't forked out money. If it comes free with the new computers, fine. I reckon we'll be seeing it for another couple of years. It's been coming free with our corporate PCs for years now, and we're still unlikely to swi

As well as SQL injection plenty of sites do odd things which mean they don't work for plenty of users. There are numerous sites which don't load when sent the header: x-forwarded-for: unknown Whatever they were trying to achieve with

I'd agree that Schneier has made the best arguments and conclusively won the debate. But that's still no reason for editorializing - the comments are the best place for that.

If we want to see the change over time then it would be much nicer to see something like a stacked line/bar chart than an animated pie chart. This could also show how the absolute amount of revenue has changed. I suspect that in MS's case i
