I thought Ruby ensured there was only one symbol with given contents, so that equality testing for symbols reduces to pointer equality. I don't Python strings behave that way. But at any rate I wasn't thinking of performance chara

Oh, I like that idea: compensate via a convention for Python's lack of a symbol data type. :)

The link points to a page that only contains the text "return true to win" in large type on a white background. As with most modern art, I don't get it.

With Strunk & White I think you should ignore their advice which is often confused or nonsensical and just imitate their prose which is delightful. This review explains it better than I could: http://chronicle.com/articl

You could switch from a purely tiling window manager to one that supports both tiling and tabbed containers, like i3.

Absolutely! Programming is much more comfortable with a physical keyboard. I wasn't suggesting coding on a phone is ideal, just that it is possible.

What do you mean you "cannot" code on tablets and smartphones? There are nice interpreters and compilers in the official app stores for major mobiles OS, aren't there? I've used Python on iOS, Android and Windows Phone.

Confusing UI? It's text separated into a sequence of pages: you read a page and when you're done you advance to the next one and so on. I like that sort of UI, books use it too.

This culture of tiny one-function modules sounds like Joe Armtrong's proposal about the "Key-Value database of all functions". http://erlang.org/pipermail/erlang-questions/2011-May/058768...

I agree that a smartphone can be a useful investment, but aren't iPhones really expensive (as are "flagship" Android phones)? My smartphone cost me about $90 unlocked, my wife's $130. I thought we were saving several hun

I don't think you give Emacs enough credit: sure you can write an Elisp function to do exactly what you need, but you can also usually do it in a few keystrokes using built in commands. Try VimGolf in Emacs sometime, my experience is t
