Sorry to be so meta, but what on earth was the point of extracting programmers.stackexchange.com from stackoverflow.com? Is this why so many questions get closed as being "off topic" on stackoverflow now? </rant>

More useful than pronouncibility would be spellability. I'd score domains with only a single spelling as higher e.g. twang.com over base.com (bass.com). To do this the algorithm would just need to scan for graphemes that share a common phon

I try to follow a gradual approach to decomposition. When I start to get a lot of related methods I wrap them in a module, but still within the model definition(I just include the module immediately after definition). From there I might jus

Coming from a java background to rails I found it entirely refreshing that everything wasn't in a utility class or service. Decomposition of a system using utility classes and services(in the n-tier style) is to make your system more proced

Maybe it's just me but I've always seen these things as positive feedback loops. I write a failing test so that I have a guide as to what to do next. I fix a bug so that my app does a better job for my user. I'm not sure where his negative

This would only make sense if you're working for an established company that can burn a few extra months early on. For a startup the runway might be too short. In this case you have no idea if your product is even going to exist a year late

This is the same with paged content, the user is equally less likely to see the adverts because maybe they don't view that page/scroll down that far. I'm guessing the issue is that if you use paged content you know that the user has looked

What's the difference between showing adverts on the next page or adverts further down the same page? They could continue all the way to the bottom of the page. Not that I want to see this but it would be an improvement on paged articles.

The only time I perform maintenance is when I'm adding a new feature. Before I add any new code I'll inspect the code that will be touched by the new code. If it's hard to understand or the abstractions are a bit wonky for what I want to ad

We've been using crossrider.com for our plugin. It let's you write the code once in javascript and then it packages the plugins for IE, chrome, firefox and safari. They've been out of beta for a while now so it's pretty solid. It's also fre

I absolutely love this vision. I'm curious about what happens when you have a workforce made up of leaders though. My first thought was that it couldn't be practical, surely we need some people to be led. But then, working in an information

I upvoted this article, not because I think it's good, actually I disagree with everything in it. I upvoted it because I wanted to hear what the HN community had to say about it.

It seems to be a feature of kitchens in Spain that the cupboards for crockery double as drying racks. The shelves are racks and the cupboards have no bottom so that the water simply falls onto the counter. My cupboard is right next to the s

Unit tests take a little time to write, sure. But look what you get for your investment: (for the sake of this discussion I'll avoid subjective issues such as improved design) 1) Faster feedback cycle - if you're developing new code you can
