@justicz: that's one clever hack, thanks for explaining in detail how it works! In case somebody is wondering about Alpine Linux based postmarketOS, this is what I wrote on /r/linux regarding this issue: postmarketOS is direc

The way chriswwweb quotes the article is leaving out important parts. It puts emphasis on the "rate limited API" wording, as if that was the part that matters. Let's take a look at what's missing: > But independent of

In the software sense, sustainable software is software that can be maintained. That means in practice not to have thousands of forks of the same piece of software (like it is done with the Linux kernel in Android). Instead, sharing as much

We would not even need the mainline kernel to decouple images from particular hardware. In postmarketOS we only have a hand full of device specific packages (ideally only one per device), and one of them is the downstream kernel for non-mai

We looked into that as well, and besides missing restore functionality, the problem is that it needs to access GitHub's rate limited API to crawl through one issue after another. In gitlab there is one API call to prepare a full back

For people curious about all the GitHub links: we are probably switching to gitlab soon. This has been in discussion since October and recent events with Microsoft tipped the scales for us. Besides the issue of trusting Microsoft or not, Gi

For most devices, we're running the vendor forks of the Linux kernel (mostly Android). The source of all of them is available, just like the mainline Linux kernel. With that being said, the stock Linux kernel and its vendor forks conta

Most phones consist of similar chips, so as long as the Linux kernel has support for these, it is possible to run something like postmarketOS on closed devices as well. It is harder, sometimes you need to hack the bootloader to get it done

I think it can be done, since there was the android on iphone project. In theory, one would need to find the Linux kernel fork that was used at the time, treat it as "vendor" kernel and start the port: https://wiki.post
