I'm always really confused about how dotted zeroes became the norm for these fonts. I always confuse them with eights and vastly prefer slashed zeroes. Would love to try this if it had such a variant.

heh - a bit off topic, but Grist was the first place I ever applied for a software job. I was a high school student looking for a summer internship. I remember bombing that phone interview (I was asked about some JS semantics, and then I ba

I don't know if this is feedback on the challenge per-se, but I was a little saddened that I couldn't add dependencies to my `Cargo.toml`; I wanted to solve part of the bencode challenge using nom (perhaps overkill, but it was for

My local glasses shop had this as an option, but only at a location that was a bit out of my way. Would have loved to try it, though!

Well, a couple things. For one, this is just a simple queue with no routing capabilities. It's a much simpler tool. For two, and more importantly, it's built into your application and introduces no additional operational dependenc

This might convince me to start using TOML. I hate JSON for configs (not all parsers support comments, yes I know JSON5 exists), and TOML's table syntax really sucks. YAML has its flaws, but it fits the bill the best IME. Now I just ha

One thing I've seen about other columnar databases (e.g. Clickhouse) is that they're bad at k/v style lookups. Why is that? Your explanation would make me think otherwise, as we would be able to quickly scan the columns using

Yeah, I think this is just an ActivityPub server that supports the Mastodon extensions, right? I think we should embrace the fact that the federated world can be diverse, rather than just call everything "Mastodon"

I do think that's a bit of a stretch. Regardless of your opinions on the ethics of AI companies training on scraped data, how is scraping publicly available artistic works a privacy issue? Me, personally, I might call it unethical and

It's fine. The T is as bad as ever, shutting off sections for weeks on end for repairs. Rents are through the roof. But things aren't all bad, it's still a fun city.

I think you would agree that harvesting that information is far easier if it's being literally POST'd to your servers (which ActivityPub does) than if you're going out to scrape them, no? It's the same principle with def

I could definitely see a benefit for them from a legislative perspective. By federating with other networks, they're able to signal to lawmakers that they're not _really_ a monopoly, they're willing to pay-ball with others. A

I mean, I guess nothing, they could absolutely still scrape data, but that's much more likely to be noticed (rather than sucking in data as part of product functionality), and is a higher barrier to entry.

Even if you don't use Threads, when they eventually add ActivityPub support, Mastodon users' data will inevitably be harvested. Instance admins have been signing a pact[1] to defederate with Meta for this reason, in addition to th

Correct - archive.is doesn't like not getting EDNS from Cloudflare ( https://jarv.is/notes/cloudflare-dns-archive-is-blocked/ ), so Cloudflare sends you to 1.1.1.7 to indicate a problem.

This is likely a result of Cloudflare DNS redirecting you, since archive.today does not have its DNS set up in a way that Cloudflare likes.

Those USB ports probably don't supply more than 5W. You almost certainly need a full 120V outlet. These do exist on planes, though, just not all.
