Apple's literal marketing message is that they do all the processing on device. It's not a shift for Apple, as apple has never done this analysis in the past, and only started doing the analysis once it could do it locally. The us

That's literally a feature of the platform. If you open the photos app and type text in it will give you the photos containing that text. If your concern is "apple is harvesting my data" then no. All of apple's various a

Didn't the FBI director literally just give testimony to the effect of "if we have to demonstrate probable cause we would not be able to get these 'warrants'"?

So there’s the general “why is this called a recall when it doesn’t have to go to a shop” complaint for which the answer is “recall is the legal term for what happens” and that is what forces action. Then there are people complaining about

@_rutinerad got it - on macOS you can select text in any image, and I just assumed you could do that on windows as well (I figure in the context of linux it would be much more dependent on specific configuration so unilateral assumptions on

100% correct, I assumed windows also let people do that given text recognition is apparently trivial now (to the extent it's annoying - trying to drag images and get text selection instead is annoying :-/)

It's really amazing when we still get those text ones and nowadays you can literally select the text in many of the images and copy/paste into the input field.

Apple does demand better conditions. For the last decade+ most reports of child/illegal labor conditions in factories that manufacture apple products have sourced apple's own supplier audits, which is super great as a message fo

Company towns are a thing that have existed in the past, and the results are very well documented. It's similar to company scrip (a thing Facebook tried to reintroduce a few years back), and in fact the two concepts support each other.

The problem is that I don't understand what the preference is. If your employee has a salary of $X, then the taxable expense should only be $X, it does not matter what the employee is doing. So I don't understand what the benefit

That sounds like something they could reasonably argue was destruction (spoliation?) of evidence, and in some cases judges are allowed to tell juries to assume evidence that was destroyed is harmful to or counters the defense's argumen

I'm still unclear on this: how is R&D not being an expense impacting the costs of a business? Paying employees is a taxable expense. Buying supplies is a taxable expense. Paying rent on office space is a taxable expense. Seriously,

Literally the point of the HSMs in phones and laptops is to stop that. If your device's encryption key is produced by a PBKDF then yes it's doable, but no actually secure system works like that. The way a secure system works is 1.
