… and Netflix is smart enough to consider them competition, because they actually understand that the market isn't defined by paying for content

Once upon a time http://www.metafilter.com/ but I've not been there in a long long time to say for certain it's like it was, but for obscure but interesting that was/is your place

If you're questioning how, you're not the target market.

i agree with as Apple will go so will the market because switching out payment systems is an order of magnitude different (because of money and politics) than choosing an inductive power standard

To be fair, you're comparing apples (ha!) and oranges… “Windows Threshold/XP/9/10”, “OS X Yosemite” are comparable to “Ubuntu“, not Linux. NT & -Darwin- [Edit: You're right LukeShu, XNU] are the Linux equivalent

I walked into my local Apple store in November with an iPhone that wouldn't wake from a screen-touch, 15 minutes later I walked out with brand new handset. Apple's still like that, its why I buy their hardware.

Well that makes sense in the real-world; Broken Hill gets South Australian television and radio and is much closer to Adelaide than Sydney (500km to 1200km), it makes sense to be on ACST not AEST

As a dev living in one of those half-hour offsets (ACST +9.5 Adelaide, South Australia) i think the only thing it's changed is our awareness of timezone issues, although there's discussion about moving us into AEST or back to AWST

Great great (old school) DJ, single-handedly can break an artist and has an impeccable taste in music. Really interesting to see what he's going to do at Apple, I assume it's iTunes Radio/rebooted Beats

I've been down on "cross platform native apps" because they're always the lowest common denominator of the language and platform, but this looks intriguing.

Apple now has more cash at hand (AU$178bn) than the Australian government (AU$136bn)

They bought it a few months ago. Minecraft.

It makes the Minecraft purchase make a whole lot more sense now. I mean, it made immediate sense it's a cash cow, but long-term Minecraft is perfect, it's simple, easy, forgiving and fun - a perfect entrance into VR/AR

It's all internal, Kinect was the first product out of the R&D apparently (its in the Wired article).

we're (Australia) doing okay with the democracy thing, no explicit freedom of speech. Plus, it depends if you define speech as "giving money to someone"

Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb was posting about his passing on Twitter this morning, including this fantastic photo of Mr Baer still in the workshop at 92. https://twitter.com/majornelson/status/541707579605282816

My problem is that 1Password et al are curing symptoms, not solving causes. Personal infosec hasn't evolved quick enough to match the technology it depends on. Sure we're comfortable with 12 character, 3 month rotation passwords,

I love Rails, it's been my tool of choice for the last six years, but "Support for real foreign keys!" shouldn't be a thing in a change-log in 2014.

Somewhere in Eastman a Kodak executive is weeping. Polaroid may not be the same company they used to be, but at least they're attempting to stay relevant.

It's why Gibson doesn't write "in the future" anymore, we're already in that world.
