In much enterprise development (indeed much of development in general) development time is much more important than CPU time. Not just because of price, but also in reaction time to new and changing requirements.

Yeah, and evopsych has the same problem as history, that it is not possible to change one variable and repeat the experiment. This makes it easy to make up explanation for observations, but hard to verify or falsify these explanations. It i

I've never seen actual bugs due to a misunderstanding of the concept though. It seem to be mostly a terminology difference between c++ and Java cultures. It is correct to say that Java passes objects as references, but it is technicall

As far as I understand, unsafePerformIO is not unsafe in relation to memory safety issues. It is just unsafe in that it circumvents the IO monad, which means order of execution is not guaranteed.

Yeah, but the article points out what is unique about the ring: The lack of wear indicates that it had few or no intermediate owners. This indicates direct contact. The Islamic coins on the other hand, most likely went through multiple owne

To be fair, the article does mention textual evidence of contact. It just say the ring is a rare archaeological evidence, which is correct.

Not necessarily, artifacts could have traveled through multiple transactions along a trade route without any single person traveling all the way. So the Buddha does not necessarily mean that a viking traveled to Asia or vice versa. Although

Perhaps even more amazing is the small Buddha statue found in a grave in Sweden from the 8th century.

Constantinople was Christian at the time though. It was the capital of the roman empire, and remained Christian until til fifteenth century. But they did fight Arabs, so there was contact that way.

In Scandinavian historiographic tradition the Middle Ages is counted from the arrival of Christianity. Being the the 8th century, the find is from the Viking Age which is earlier.

In Java you also need recursion, even if it is not ubiquitous as in functional languages. Say you want to traverse a tree structure - a directory hierarchy for example - you need recursion.
