I use Grails, which is Spring Boot with sane defaults already configured. Grails is very similar to Rails, while Spring Boot still involves some configuration.

The cloud is great for scaling indeed, but a cheap Intel V4 server with 44 cores from Ebay for $2000 can handle a shit ton of traffic too. If I were building a new business, I would use both cloud and colo. But I do understand that everyone

My workstation is Linux, which I mostly use. Though I have a MacBook laptop that I also use. So I voted for Linux, though MacOS is a close second. I also use Windows for development, but that is only when I do Windows specific stuff.

Packaging, pre-sales and support. I had a very good margins, so overall it wasn't a bad business with long hours. For many this would have been fine. But for me it got boring really quick, shut down after about 18 months.

I quit a normal job in 2015 to do freelance consulting. I had no plan, luckily I found two clients for part time work and for the rest of my hours I created a e-commerce site that I operated for myself. That quickly escalated and made more

If you are using ZFS, I strongly recommend using LZ4 or ZSTD compression with PostgreSQL. Performance is still awesome. On average I get 2x compressionratio with LZ4 and 4x with ZSTD. With this, you are compressing everything, not just colu

Not really, I've learned a lot from the PostgreSQL documentation and various Stack Overflow answers. Like with everything, getting experience and your hands dirty will make you far more knowledgeable. There is no silver bullet.

If you read the link about pg_upgrade, you're not guaranteed that pg_upgrade will work if the underlying data storage format changes. pg_upgrade may not work in a future version of PostgreSQL. It works for version 14 though.
