ActivityPub servers own your account. This is a non-starter for me unless someone holds server admins accountable to laws or some kind of liability

I would rather just use a public key. No need for an entity (no matter how benevolent) to manage my identity for me. In terms of the vibe that something gives off, stuff is usually "cooler" when it seems like you didn't care

Yeah, because Mastodon is the most happening place online lol. I can't believe people on hacker news talk like this. Embarrassing how far this community has declined. Can't even discuss protocols without these stupid comments.

Perhaps better is decentralized twitter (Nostr). Your account doesn't live on a server and you send events to multiple servers if you want to. If one server goes down, it hardly impacts you.

I know I’m not going to get results from smaller pages when I search google. It makes me think I might as well make a list of 20 popular websites and just search all of those and collate the results

This is what I always wanted to see. Municipalities running federated servers. Solves the problem of "which server do I pick" and also gives user guarantees that are tangibly bound to real entities. I think a whole nation is too b

Their use of ActivityPub is just a way to quickly bootstrap social media functionality using time tested libraries. Just like they did with XMPP.

Have you considered that skin color is more than just skin color? That a people, a culture, is more than the amount of melanin they have? The idea that everyone is a blank slate wrapped in different colors of skin seems quite reductive, if

The most frustrating thing about decline like this is that we aren’t even allowed to ask the questions that would set us on a path to figuring it out. The Overton Window[0] is set in such a way to perfectly ensure that the decline continues

I bet Nostr[1] integration in scripts will unlock tons of value for this. A totally open messaging and posting protocol that is maximally simple. [1]: https://github.com/nbd-wtf/nostr-tools

You used to be able to do something very similar with Perl, right? A bunch of independent scripts that were basically web endpoints? I forget the name of those little scripts... edit: CGI ?

I follow 400 people on Twitter and only see the same 10 accounts non-stop. Nobody else. Where is everyone else I follow? Honestly, I think they're mostly shadowbanned or de-ranked. Who knows why.

You basically have to zoom in on the camera app to get a 50mm equivalent photo. This isn't as bad as it seems though. The 2x quality is quite good on the baseline photos these days. However, on the "pro" iphone models, they d

One thing about Nostr is that there is no authentication to retrieve data. So the data can be spread far and wide, without permission. This can obviously be both good or bad depending on what your use case is! I think that BlueSky has aut

Old style numerals are my favorite actually. There aren't that many descenders in lowercase English, but in a script like Shavian where there are many, the old style figures feel really "at home".
