Why can't we have one damn HN post without some obscene war tech shit?

But using it in a browser presumably downloads image tiles from the server. Osmand downloads vector data and renders it on the fly. It's both the "server" and the "client".

Does this do basically the thing as osmand on phones? Why the relatively huge requirements of 64G of ram and 10T of nvme?

Good thing we have HN user cutemonster to tell us what the Chinese people want.

What a bizarre and ridiculous view to form based on one conversation. I'm sure you can find plenty of people in the west who believe stupid things. Does that mean that western countries are "removing pieces of reality"?

There are so many utilities. Why not just use ansible? It can manage your dotfiles and much more (you can configure your whole machine).

TikTok is regulated. It has to follow the same laws as every other company. Your paranoia is bizarre.

I always have a laugh when people say TikTok has x-type content. The truth is it has that type of content _for you_. Because it's what you engaged with. TikTok has lots of great content, but some people really don't like what they

I think this case-sensitive byte/bit distinction was always a bad idea, and what you're experiencing is the consequence of a bad idea, not stupid people. For example sometimes MESSAGES ARE WRITTEN IN ALL CAPS. Now what does your B

The messaging does seem excessive and hostile. It says "Managed by your organization." every time you click the menu button. It's even in a different background color and bigger margins. If you click it, it says "Your ad

The UK isn't thriving - 18% inflation, low salaries (except in the money laundering industry), bad and very expensive housing, no infrastructure investment, etc.

The memory is still soldered on I guess, even after the framework laptop proved that you can have a compact laptop and memory slots (and other stuff), something we were told wasn't possible.

Why use a special syntax that's hard to remember when you can just use Python? I wrote a jq-like that accepts Python syntax called pq: https://github.com/dvolk/pq So you can write stuff like: $ echo '{

On a mechanical keyboard you can take the key caps off for easy cleaning. Though I just dust my keyboard and it's pretty clean.

The brevity is great when used interactively. For scripting you can always use Python, which is lightyears ahead of PS.

Why not just buy a keyboard (that's better than any laptop keyboard)? There are many benefits. I always consider the built-in keyboard as a sort of emergency/convenience tool.

I have an XPS 17 with 12th gen and it drains around 50% battery per hour on a zoom call. edit: My laptop has a i7-12700H, which uses more power than the cpu in the framework laptop. More thoughts: The laptop is pretty much always plugged in

There's no doubt that the US criminal justice system is profoundly dysfunctional, starting with the fact that most of the accused are successfully extorted by prosecutors into accepting plea bargains. But simply on the topic of paying

It sounds pretty miserable, but there are plenty of people of have committed no crime, work, pay their expenses, and are miserable. Yet the government pays no bills and provides no help.

Sure, that's probably all true. I'm just trying to contrast the reality of living outside of prison (a substantial amount of money goes to living expenses) to living in prison (you have or should have no expenses). To me if you pa

I'm not sure I find this argument convincing. Would you say that if I speed and get a fine, then society has chosen to fine me and so they should pay the fine?
