You don't have to go there; especially not the whole 4 years; just googled Illinois state is more like $6500, and community colleges are way cheaper -- and you can use CLEP too! (OTOH, CS at UIUC would look really coll on the resume, s

Porque no los dos ? (said in annoying taco-commercial voice) If you can truly get a 60-80K job, then do it and go to school part-time; if you prefer, go to college full-time, and work part-time; if you make 30K, then you can attend college

And it may also have to do with your definition of 'dockworker' ; Dell's mom and dad were a stockbrocker and an orthodontist; Clinton was working-class but not poor; same with Jobs (he was adopted at birth, dad was a mechanic

Marginally ? Have you seen anarchy ? You get warlords, feudalism, that kind of stuff (see Somalia). I'm assuming the writer lives in the US; I think he greatly exaggerates the issues; the system works; most people live with enough food

It is possible; however, it is a LOT easier with a CS degree (it is easier with a non-tech degree than without a degree at all :). Chances are a degree will also help later, when getting better jobs. You will see many comments of people w

Interesting, especially since I've just started working for Microsoft, in Bing Ads, and a big factor in deciding to come was the interview process. The phone interview involved writing code in a shared environment, the in-person interv

A small over-generalization, don't you think ? Most people go to college to BOTH learn and get a credential. You can learn almost everything on your own, but it is usually easier to do it in an organized setting (curriculum, peers, tea

The real problem is IDEs; the JVM is also a resource hog; however, you can run lots of server software on small hardware; heck, my RaspberryPi runs mysql, postgresql and apache (and PHP), plus a django app, and has only 256MB RAM; it's

I disagree; I see two problems with netbooks: 1. People were expecting a laptop; they are not; however, they're decent computers (don't do video, don't run VMs ... :), and portability and price are really nice. 2. Laptops got
