I think submodules end up highlighting failures of the (implementation of the) many small repo model. People want to develop in both the submodules and main repo simultaneously, and that’s relatively painful. If you find yourself doing that

A normal company would have had basically one product all these years and not renamed it just due to internal engineering efforts. I also imagine chat apps are great for promotion driven development. Not that hard to make from scratch relat

Data scientists are hired for a certain set of skills, and software engineers are hired for a different set. That’s the reality of specialization. I don’t often see data scientists complaining that software engineers are bad at statistics.

The “luck” Python ran into was that some people came together to write NumPy. The alternatives at the time were Matlab and R. Matlab is not a great general programming language and is expensive. R has esoteric syntax and also isn’t a great

I think people have some big misunderstandings about power. You’re right, centralized systems can lead to monopolies. On the other hand, decentralized systems where no one has absolute power can make important changes difficult to implement

The low interest rate is beneficial to Goldman Sachs, but the high inflation rate is not. They are an investment bank that holds assets, and those assets are devalued by inflation. The the interest rate and inflation may have some correlati

Why would it be? If it drives up prices, WD is less able to capture that price increase due to production losses than its competitors.

Creating “useful” compounds from atmospheric green house gasses isn’t some “have your cake and eat it, too” type thing. It is going to be extremely inefficient and expensive. Emitting less is still cheaper.

I think the point he is making is that profitable fusion-based electricity generation isn’t a physics problem; it is an engineering problem. Engineering requires dealing with people in addition to physics.

Madoff's "investment" firm, I think, is a good comparison for Holmes's Theranos. They're both conartists that peddled their image and influence to run fake businesses and steal money from investors. My pre-edit post

You lost the word “universal” in “universal healthcare” in the comment you’re replying to. There are many ways racism impedes the push for universal healthcare. One is the classic fact that it is a welfare program, and that spurs the commen

Python had basically already won numerical computing thanks to NumPy, SciPy, and Matplotlib before ML really blew up. The other two serious contenders were R and Matlab. Python is a much better general purpose language than either of those,

If you hit a 10 ton object and _any_ of the collision is inelastic, that is a tremendous amount of momentum to dissipate. It might not change the speed of the sub much, but it could still cause a lot of damage to the hull which could then i
