Well, seeing that you're a Starcraft player, it's not as though a laptop really would be an option ^^ More seriously, I think that your setup would hurt my eyes. Having a dedicated monitor is far nicer than using a laptop, but you have scre

Yes, that should be the case anyway: The widget shows itself when it is finished decorating. But even then, there's no sense in deferring decoration until after some other arbitrary resources have loaded.

There is no de facto DOM library. I just said as much ... jQuery would be "de facto" if projects adopted it without a second thought, and in my experience this doesn't happen except with beginners.

That's just FUD though. The potentially "silently failing" methods are all documented, and do not include any of the most commonly used ES5 features (Function.prototype.bind, Array.prototype.filter, etc.).

jQueryIsAwesome, you must not know what an ES5 shim is. It is a cross-browser solution. https://github.com/kriskowal/es5-shim Especially when you note that JavaScript is not just run in browsers these days, and that most server-side dep

Why would you include ES5 shims instead of using code that's well tested, already written, and bundled in a neat package. I'm not sure how much you really need to test an each() loop. It is a very simple thing as are most of the other fea

"Modern JavaScript code", like I was saying, uses an ES5 shim and functions like Array's forEach, map, some, every, Functions' bind, etc. I just didn't want it to sound like I thought the only thing ES5 provides is forEach. Regarding your o

This is a good, if long-winded document. At over 100 pages, it will take a dedicated reader to sift the gold. As other patterns covered display aspects of DRY-ness with JavaScript, let's take a look at how to write DRY code using jQuery. N

A strong reason to not do so is when you want some part of the page to be immediately enhanced with JavaScript (like a login form). If the page has many images and other resources, your users will have an awkward experience, with the script

I don't think that's a very good comparison. A project in the Mac world begins and ends its life as a .app. This effort by Apple means that the vast majority of users will only see "approved" software. In the Linux world, most software begi

This is a scary preview of Apple's vision of desktop computing (which we all anticipated with the App Store being brought over from the iPhone world to the desktop): The safest place to find apps for your Mac is the Mac App Store. That’s b

It's just an ugly way to do a mapping. I used to have some mappings like these in my rc, but I removed them in favor of similar ones that backtrack instead. If the author wants "jj" to be <ESC>, it can be done without the lag: You j

The Escape key on modern keyboards is a lot further from home row than it was on Bill Joy’s keyboard back when he designed vi. Hitting Escape is usually unnecessary; Ctrl+[ is a lot closer, and more comfortable. That's not an "anti-patter

It seemed surprisingly popular ca. 2007 before people figured out that they were, I shit you not, tampering with the DistroWatch numbers by spoofing hits. A decent distro though, and it was a little more usable than Mandriva at the time.

Mandriva and its descendant PCLinuxOS also fall into this category. I believe Mandriva is relatively popular in Europe also, being used in government and such.

For a complete one-off, plain JavaScript and DOM. For a small, simple project, MooTools. For a large project, Closure Tools. jQuery's not a good choice for anything I work on, and its "God Object" API makes for repugnant code.

jsmin.py is worlds slower than jsmin.c (I benchmarked one project at 10+s for Python and <2s for C). I think the author will want to use the latter. Also, without the ability to build a dependency graph (something Closure Tools excel at

I disagree with that, certainly there's space for a slackware-like distro with a decent package manager. Debian, RHEL, etc. are excellent, but there's no denying that they do some things in their own special ways, for better or worse. But w

That was a question to parent. _Of course_ S3 costs money. That's why it's not reasonable to compare it to a service like Megaupload, where you only needed to pay if you wanted to store over 200GB total, or have individual files larger than
