You might try common lisp then, as it has an object system (CLOS), and does not enforce functional purity. The one downside is that a lot of people like to complain about it, for reasons that don't really make sense to me. The first advanta

I agree completely, as I know you are talking about electricians, plumbers and similar professions. However, some of that stuff may have gone to china too, sort of. What do you do if your dishwasher breaks? Throw it out, buy a new one. (Unl

I disagree with absolutely everything that you wrote. I use flet/labels/map/reduce all the time. I find that in certain places avoiding statefulness can be a readability advantage. Nothing wrong with using an array as it is simple and easy

Is 'learning programming' in quotes because it is sarcastic? You don't program anything until the final exam, and the final exam is two relatively trivial tasks. Just start with the final exam, and then build it out until you have something

I have a friend who works for Bose. Their product line is mostly acoustics, but they also do a lot of really interesting and varied research/innovation in a number of electrical and mechanical engineering fields.

It seems criminal to me that Universities are allowed to have teaching assistants teach classes. Aren't they supposed to be the assistants, not the teachers? It seems OK to have them help with grading or tutoring, but teaching the entire cl

If you continue with this line of reasoning you'll come off sounding an awful lot like Monty Python's "What have the Romans done for us?" Skit.

You know, I really like this idea. What if in general there were an option for higher education that was more spread out? I'm imagining a system that is more based on apprenticeship; where you work and you learn at the same time, and after

That might be true. It is indeed complex if you look at the BNF in the hyper-spec. ( http://www.lispworks.com/documentation/HyperSpec/Body/m_loop... ) If you ignore the hyperspec, however, and get a feel for it by looking at examples and wr

You are supposed to hate your code. If you don't hate it, you aren't trying hard enough. I would not equate hating the code with the code being something to be ashamed of. I hate every goddamn piece of code I write.

The squint test only passes for one and fails for the other because of your familiarity with the Algol-style language. I immediately recognized a defun or defmacro in the second, and didn't know wtf was going on in the first. It is a (def-

"Asking a CL advocate whether Scheme is a Lisp is like asking a plantation owner whether his slaves are human beings." That is a horribly inept analogy. My guess is that most CL guys would say 'yes, it is.' "It is my reasoned opinion that o

I would recommend getting rid of up-voting and positive karma. People make pithy comments in order to get positive karma. Same reason for meme threads. The real reason for a karma mechanic on HN is to filter out incredibly stupid comments.

Obj when constructed contains a reference to the Dog class. Assignment updates the reference to be the Cat class. None of this has relevance to the ability to compile to machine code. It does however, have implications for the efficiency of
