Are you an expert in those subjects? No? Then you aren't a polymath. Gaining expertise in something isn't as simple as watching a TED talk, reading an article, or even mastering a textbook. You might be a jack-of-all-trades, but l

Just a reminder that Tape Op (the magazine cited above) is free; you just have to register. They even send you their print copy for free, which is wonderful.

How is this site science related? I search science, and the only thing that pops up is "Science Fiction Paintings." I search physics, and the only thing that pops up is "Karate."

You're absolutely correct with everything you've said (although postdocs do get benefits here). I do think I have a problem with the prestige aspect. I am always wavering between two different feelings: "I need to make the bi

Thank you for the great reply! I hear statement (1) quite a lot, but it seems like a really subjective criterion. When I hear this, I think, "If I'm not as passionate as Feynman, I should not go to grad school." And so I have

I began working as a student at a national lab two years ago after earning my bachelor's degree in physics. I was converted to staff nearly a year later. I'm now earning more than most of my professors back home and some of the po

After reading these other comments, I Googled David E. Shaw and found this: http://mathbabe.org/2012/04/05/it-sucks-to-be-rich/ . (WARNING: Not sure of the validity of these stories, but they're inte

I was downvoted yesterday for criticizing someone's lame joke on an article concerning Michael Jordan, the computer scientist. Guess what the joke involved?

That sounds terrifying. Can you give some examples of ten year goals? I don't even know where I want to be a year from now.

My mistake. My head immediately went to "acquisition" instead of "investment." Nonetheless, it is interesting how these investment decisions (and valuations) are made.

The most important metric in this type of transport is efficiency (i.e., mass delivered / energy consumed), not speed. I can't imagine anything more efficient than cargo ships in this case.

I was responding to the idea that disruption would occur by means of drones and 3D printing. (I agree that for small amounts of materials, this might someday be the case, but currently, this is obviously not a "ripe," disruptive a
