IT depts don't care about developers getting shit done, they care about covering their asses. I work at a software company that has an IT dept that seems to do anything in it's power to keep work from being done. They do on access virus s

post your question on the intellij forum: http://www.jetbrains.net/devnet/community/idea/ideacommunity and if it doesn't do what you want, I suggest writing a feature request. I have gotten quite a few features this way.

SVN has HTTP auth. no SSH key BS. Until Git has this you can forget about adoption for most corporate dev.

i love this plugin. one of the things that keeps me off of safari, no way to fix this (that I know of) my main beef with OS X is weird keyboard behavior. CMD instead of CTRL is fine, but home/end/pageup/pagedown behavior is retarded. and

this was common practice about 15 years ago, before people discovered that putting biz logic in stored procs really sucked for UI interaction, sucked for maintainability (stored proc languages really suck), and truly sucked for scalability.

I have some contrary anecdotal evidence. I have seen/know dozens of people who carry their work phone (usually a blackberry). And then they carry the phone they really want along with it: the iPhone. Windows mobile is a joke. Hardly any

I'd recommend trying Netbeans with the Ruby Plugin or Ruby Mine. I've been using Ruby Mine some lately and am pretty impressed. Has a debugger that works well, auto-completion, rake integration, click thru to declaration, etc. It's not goi

This is silly. Auto-complete doesn't do any thinking, it's just presenting you options of what to do. You make the decision. You do the thinking.

What if the standards suck? Sorry but Javascript doesn't cut it for a lot of things (video for one). Web standards unfortunately move at an insanely slow pace. So sometimes you have to go beyond them.

Take a look at the years since SOX was passed. IPOs have plummeted.

I know a CEO of an Internet company that planned on doing an IPO in 2008. Of course the economy tanked so it's not happening. He told me that SOX required the company to have auditing/traceability and controls for everything. This meant t

In some ways it's a giant step backwards... you have to deal with pointers and header files. And it repeats itself a lot (declare the same things multiple times). String manipulation is awful in Objective C. I would say it's a hell of a lo

we just started a new project and we tried out git briefly. our prob with git is it supports ssh auth only (not HTTP Auth), which is retarded. makes setting up new users a pain. and leading non-techies thru setting it up is quite a challe

I don't think JRuby gets enough credit. He pretty much dismisses it because it uses a lot of memory and starts too slow for simple scripting. The JRuby team have done some tricks to speed up startup time, seems to respond almost as fast

in many cases with a large project it's faster to work with a GUI. You can navigate complex hierarchies more quickly.

I am trying out Git for a new project and I think we are going to end up going back to SVN. Problems: There is no support user based auth, so you have to set up SSH keys. Pain for our non-techies in the group. You should be able to add us
