If the question, and the purpose of the exam, is framed as "why did the author do this or that?", then sure authorial intent has meaning to the question. And I certainly think what the author intended to mean can be culturally int

I thought a lot of what we learned about poems in school was overly prescriptive, and my friends and I could often invent and justify other meanings. But, unlike with multiple choice, in assignments and exams we were supposed to do exactly

I see this as really good idea for people who are motivated by this kind of accountability. I think the concept of journal and the privacy of such things is kind of leading some commentors astray. I see several use cases that would not be p

Journals are not just for deep dark introspection. What about journaling about things you've read, art that inspired you, things you saw in the world, things that might be significant to you in some non revealing way? If you need a tot

If that's declared up front on their menu, I don't mind because I have the choice to not eat their if I'm not OK with that. I've never had to pay a service charge that I can recall on a small party. Usually over 6 or so.

Like the other commenter, I've never had this happen. If I tipped way below what other customers tip, I would like to be told politely and then make a choice about whether I was going to tip more, but I think even that would be frowned

Yes, it is annoying. My point is just that it being annoying doesn't mean that is easy to solve, or that the cost of solving the annoyance in a non-systematic way is worth it (i. e., trailblazing restaurants forge ahead on their own, i

Here's a pickle: I agree with the direction of this article, but I don't agree with most of the individual points and statements. I think the expectation of tipping in the US is in general a bad thing, but has enough upsides for b

I think you were right about the catch 22 thing, which is the core problem that this article misses. Uber doesn't have tipping but don't you rate your rides in a way that can ultimately reduce the amount of work that driver gets?

I've taught guitar on and off over the years, including to retirees- I would say you are never to old too learn. Please forgive how reductive this comment will be, it may not help at all. I do think you have to have this coincidence in

I think the parent comment is mistaken. I've always heard this used as referring to exchanges of roughly equivalent things- whereas, "an eye for an eye" leans negative, "tit for tat" is neither negative or positive.

That's so interesting. I have most definitely flipped from night to morning over the years. Work may have had some steadying influence on that.

Equally there could be beneficial aspects to working on different coding problems outside a main job- improving skills, learning new tools, whatever. But that's not the important thing. To me, the important thing for an employer should

It's great when everybody can see through stuff like this and work with a coherent but imperfect approach (no matter what field you are in). I guess it takes knowledgeable, experienced folks to really understand the context and make th

Decisions are costly, and things that reduce the number of decisions you have to make can be useful in moving work forward and making you more productive. Out at least making you feel productive. It's obviously not a great idea to foll

You got a good long answer, but more simply: An expected level of occasional 40+ hour weeks is often baked into to the salary at a higher level. When I switched to a salaried manager position, my new rate of pay was better than my old hourl

I find that this fails if your job involves putting out fires and responding to unpredictable client needs. I used to make a very concrete schedule at the start of a week and by midweek most of it was out the window. I do usually keep small

I wonder about this. I'm pretty new to js frameworks and I see the advantage when things need to scale or get very complex, and I get that companies use these things. But for a simple assignment like this, is it better to use vanilla j
