I'm currently working on deploying an ELK box for visualising a mix of financial transaction data and corresponding network application backend syslog records. So far so good, but frontend Kibana 3 performance can be really painful at

Does anybody know how these sorts of devices are presented to an operating system? Is it controlled/programmed in a similar manner to a modern GPGPU card?

A lot of HN posts related to BSD release announcements end up with the inevitable "Can somebody explain the advantages of using xxxBSD?" comments. Might be worth looking at the comments section for some of those past submissions.

Don't get me wrong, they definitely handled this in an appropriate manner. "Better safe than sorry", but I just wonder about these sorts of situations. It reminds me of the ridiculous "SWATting" craze; wasting time

I haven't gone further than reading TFA, but, was there anything beyond the tweeted screenshot to suggest that this was an actual "compromise"? Seems like a quick and easy way to cause quite a large fuss with minimal effort.

Do you mean they're holding back progress? With OpenZFS on the scene, it's highly likely that the original Sun/Oracle implementation will become irrelevant to everyone apart from users of Oracle's Solaris releases.

Yeah, Apple, among many other companies, helped usher in a new era of personal computing, but most of the use cases in this video can be achieved with a generic Wintel setup.

"the pain of getting Mono to run on Linux" What's painful about 'apt-get install mono-runtime mono-mcs'? (or your distro's equivalent) Its main target platform is/was Linux.

I remember being so excited by E17 back when development was first started on the EFL. Prior to all the Xgl/AIGLX jazz, it seemed like Enlightenment may have had a bright future ahead of it, where it would outshine all the current offe

Never realized the 2BSD series was being developed in parallel with 4BSD. I love to geek out on Unix history when I'm bored, so I'm surprised I never picked up on this.
