PhoneGap uses the underlying OS WebView. If the WebView is slow your PhoneGap application will be slow.

If you prefer C++, Cocos2d-X may be a good fit for you. I've tried it, but I just couldn't stand it, because of the way they've translated the Objective-C object model and bolted this on top of C++. To me it looks hardly idio

You already can, just be warned that if you use something different than Java you won't be able to export to the web. From my understanding (please correct me if I'm wrong) LibGDX converts only Java code to JavaScript and HTML5.

Probably has something to do with the 3D acceleration Unity needs. In my case (MacBook Air 2013 with 8GB of RAM I run Ubuntu 12.04.4 without a problem).

Try Elance :). The escrow is guaranteed for most projects. Same goes for oDesk if you work by the hour.

Nobody stops you to install an alternate GUI on top of Ubuntu or install other Linux distro. HN is not the place for ad hominem attacks (even if you don't like the way Mark changes Ubuntu).

To be fair, VirtualBox runs flawlessly on OSX and Windows. I've also used VirtualBox without problems on Ubuntu. What Linux distribution you use ?

QEMU lets you emulate ARM architecture on x86 for example, which is not possible with VirtualBox. I've played with a Raspbian image running on QEMU hosted on Windows 7 a few months ago.

I feel the system is flawed and can be manipulated by anyone. This is, unfortunately, true. You can however make some money on Freelancer if you offer quality and keep your prices at a medium level.

The difference is that RAC protected both the interest of the coder and the buyer. Freelancer seems to be only interested in taking money from both sides. If a buyer cancel his credit card used to pay for a project, the coder is not protect

I couldn't get a gig against every Indian and other third world country scamming the system with 10 accounts a piece I'm not Indian, but some HN readers may find offensive that you equate Indian with scammer.

Pity they have such a horrible site design and poor documentation (scattered in too many places). For e.g. the code example on this page could be made easier to read/understand with a simple syntax highlighter: http://suppor

A possible solution: - Block all machines from accessing the web, let them access only the intranet; - Install a lightweight VM with a browser on every machine and use this to access the Internet (for e.g. you could use a VM with a small Li

Best Lua "class" example I've seen is in the PIL 3rd edition it is about 10 lines of code and lets you use inheritance and some other nice OOP concepts.

They already have a good shell, it is named PowerShell. The problem for most old Unix beards with it is that it is not a Bash like shell.

If you don't have a touchscreen you can set Windows 8.1 to boot (start) directly in Desktop mode, basically you can bypass the Metro interface.

I think Windows 8.1 is a lot closer to the classic Windows experience than Windows 8 for e.g. If you select the option to boot directly in the Desktop mode. My mother (55) recently switched from XP to Windows 8.1. Except for 1 - 2 days of i

From my own experience Crosswalk gives you about 60 fps for simple canvas based games on Android 4.3 and 4.4. It is an interesting framework to use.

Actually they use Java the language, except that the code doesn't run on JVM but on a different VM (Dalvik at this time). Dalvik supports Java 6 and parts from Java 7.

Fortran is the oldest programming language in existence today, because of this it has a lot of cruft. However, if you put your compiler in standard mode (2003 or 2008 standard) you have a pretty modern language: modules, interfaces, functi

Don't bother with PhoneGap on Android, the experience is terrible (especially on Android 4.4). A good alternative is the CrossWalk project. On iOS PhoneGap runs reasonably well.
