We as humans and programmers are creatures of habit, Unity by being a relatively new technology will break some habits in our work ritual. Give it a few years and nobody will complain about this.

Finally with Ubuntu 12.04 we have a smooth Unity experience. I've used the 12.04 since beta and it just works.

Thanks, I've actually used Linux from ... 1999, hopefully I'm still sane even if I need to use CentOS for RedHat compatibility on one of my shiny new laptops.

So, as I suspected, your antivirus deletes the installer when you try to install Racket. Have you tried to right click and install as an administrator ?

Unfortunately I can't edit the title anymore (really sorry about that), HN let's you modify a post for a limited amount of time, after which the title (and the possibility to delete a post) is frozen. As a side note, the title is the non ed

Have you considered installing Enthought free edition ? It has in a single package: Python, Numpy, Scipy, IPython, and you can install it on Linux, Windows and Mac.

Well, if you want to be trouble free and use your machine for coding I a think Mac is a good choice. But I would wait for 1-2 months to see what the new Macs will offer. You really need to consider what kind of work are you going to do with

Actually from a technical point of view it is simpler to land on an asteroid than on Mars (you avoid the gravity wheel). It will be cheaper to extract the minerals locally than to "take the rocks" back to Earth.

You could use Haskell for prototyping your idea and call a, hopefully faster, C implementation for portions of your code. Having said that, you should always use a profiler to determine what portions of your code can potentially benefit fro
