If you have good judgement, it's quite easy to prevent a fatality. I.e. I go slower in places where I know pedestrians might jump out.

Reliability is expensive and slow. Companies hate expensive and slow, especially when you have a demo that basically does what you want sans edge cases.

This is not a helpful suggestion (even if it's often correct) in the same way that "don't get a knee replacement" is also unhelpful (though often correct).

Right, a coefficient of performance (COP) of 1 is equal to 100% efficiency. A heat pump typically exceeds that, so your COP 2 heat pump is 200% efficient (useful heat divided by work required). If an electrical joule cost the same as a natu

Electric heat in the form of heat pumps is fairly competitive (certainly not 2-3x). You are correct that running an electric current through a resistive wire is not an economical solution.

Thunderbird does not support carddav. Contacts + Thunderbird is generally a terrible experience. I switched to Zoho’s webmail because of this (at least I can get bidirectional sync to my iPhone).

Ok, so you're at 25/mo + 5/mo + 10/mo = $40/mo for self hosted. That's almost exactly "halfway between 12 and 70/mo". Plus, S3/Glacier and a backed up hard drive (even with raid) are nowhere

The only confusing thing about this is: you’re cool with AWS but insist on deploying your own hardware for personal projects! You can buy a lot of EC2 compute per month before you hit the cost of running outdated servers on your power bill.

Ok, so then I spend 5 minutes changing some boilerplate and upload it to Azure/Google Cloud/a server I bought on craigslist? Even if that did happen, I probably would still have saved time overall, because I didn't have to ma

I upload my code to AWS, and it gets run. You save your code to your Intel laptop, and it gets run. Neither of us have the complete source code that is used to run that code. You have to be ok with that, and drawing a line in the sand at th

I don't think (or at least, the performance doesn't indicate) that AWS Lambda does anything special other than caching your function's JVM for some undefined period of time after every request.

Why didn't you write a nice python wrapper for AWS Batch? You'd get all the benefits of fully managed code, but none of the limits of Lambda functions. I don't see how any of your workloads are super latency sensitive -- a tr
