My feeling is the kind of pandering a leader used to do to get into a seat of power has changed thanks to the internet and the state of info overload we live in. They are much more aware of who to target and what that group wants to hear. A

Idk I think US has bigger problems than whether it's semiconductor tech gets stolen. Social media and the news media have created such a dysfunctional environment that I am finding it increasingly hard to believe constructive debate&#x

Do you think that's working? Once you take this position, and from the outcomes we see all around us, its very easy to reach a conclusion that the edu system is failing as a large part of the population can't parse what they are b

All you have to do is ask Google - did inequality increase under 8 years of Obama? Look at the results that pop up. You will see articles filled with charts and data that tell two totally different stories. Every other link will dutifully f

I'll qualify that with - only if you know what you are doing. If someone is struggling in the deep sea, dive in to help only if you have experience swimming in the deep sea. This stuff is not simple and can have lifelong negative effec

The programmers who implement these systems don't even know that their upvotes mechanisms can have a down side. Only after they acknowledge it as an incomplete and incorrect social signal and that they are out of their depth in control

Most definitely it does effect the HN users. Every site that uses the upvotes mechanism as a signal to the group about what they should think or focus on is producing both positive and negative consequences. It's used not because the g

It can. The root cause of a lot of problems Facebook creates is the like count next to every utterances, article or behaviour on the net. This has to be regulated much more than private data/friend graphs/location data/what y

I meant they make a difference in comparison to non-targeted ads. It's easy to measure. Both have low conversion rates but the difference is not negligible or ignorable depending on what you sell.

That's the customer point of view. Spend sometime with a sales or marketing team esp when they are rolling out a new campaign or product. Targeting makes a big difference even though the conversion rates maybe low. I think personal inf

That is pretty good :) I can't find it right now, but some very similar phrase was used after the Deep Water Horizon explosion and oil spill, which caused the BP CEO to get fired, to describe the role of the leader in such situations.

It probably is, given the type of characters proped up by the attention economy. China hasn't produced a Trump yet. Meanwhile the US has laid the foundation with the attention economy (that props up people with the largest view/re

Well done. Great logic. The majority can also prop up a Kim Kardashian and Trump who met in the Whitehouse today and took a nice selfie. Those two idealists are taking your majority for great ride pal.

On the internet of 2018 sites like Reddit/FB/YouTube/Twitter are perceived to have VALUE to users for just one simple reason - instant validation of whatever bull is flitting thro their minds. The like/upvote/view&#

No difference. Just that mindless consumption culture turns people with brains into ants running an ant hill. So there will always be opposition.
