That's what Scala already does: if a method does not take any args then the parentheses aren't necessary. To quote Odersky: "This convention supports the uniform access principle which says that client code should not be affected by a decis

When I first started using revision control on a work project, I used to commit after every few lines to "save" my work. Without commit messages. Boy, did I pay for that one.

What bugs do you speak of? I've been syncing my contacts with Google and I haven't noticed anything gamebreaking.

Is this still a one-man operation? I'm very impressed with it (and even more so if it's just you) and have showed some of my coworkers. How much time do you dedicate to developing and maintaining NewsBlur? Do you do this full time now?

It just doesn't seem like there's any room in the market for Groupon and all of the me-too startups. The business model for most of these companies don't seem to add up in the long run either.

The second coming of Java isn't Java, it's the JVM. Look at the rise of Clojure, Scala, and other JVM-based languages.

Perhaps the comment was aimed in context of Oracle's recent actions with NoSQL - simultaneously downplaying NoSQL and integrating NoSQL with Oracle seemed a bit like a late reaction to the growing trend that's threatening their cash cow.

Excellent news. I'm just starting to learn Scala as a natural evolution to Java. The pace of Heroku rolling out new language support lately has been great. I'll be playing around with Heroku more, but I have to wonder: should I be expecting

I've tried to construct a social graph from my own data using the Twitter API as a side project, but it seems that the rate limiting of 350 API calls/hr really kills what I can do. Anyone have experience or insight into an approach to this?

And yet at the same time, Oracle is trying to fold in NoSQL to its product line. The idea of them trying to stymie NoSQL growth and using it at the same time is laughable. They're starting to feel the pressure a little too late now.

I find it odd that GAE has lower average response times in Canada than it does in the USA. However, as others have said, the granularity of the study leaves a lot to be desired.

Most days, I wear a t-shirt, basketball shorts, and Rainbow sandals to work. I'm a strong believer in wearing what's appropriate for the job. If I'm sitting in the office all day just coding, I don't need to be dressed nicely would rather b

I've bookmarked this for myself later on- I'm a developer with no design chops whatsoever. There's a big space for apps that make it easier for developers to push out aesthetically pleasing front ends.

This is fantastic for teaching sorting algorithms visually. I'm going to see if I can forward this to my former professors and teachers.

It'd be interesting to look at relative code quality vs. size on a per-language basis. Some languages take a whole lot less boilerplate to accomplish the same thing.

To preface my comment, my background is not in CS. I majored in biomedical engineering at UT Austin, where I chose a track that required a fair amount of programming. In my curriculum, I was required to first take 2 courses using assembly l

The Raspberry Pi sounds cool in concept. I should hope that the demo is unoptimized for now, perhaps the ceiling for the hardware is higher than we anticipate.

Git is very powerful and I do like it more than SVN, but I felt like I had more trouble switching to it from SVN than if I had learned git from a clean slate. Switching my mindset from SVN-style centralized repos to decentralized git was th

On the topic of company size and affordability, have you ever heard of any smaller companies (read: startups) that have 20% time?
