In my experience, flickering often means a GPU-related bug. Sometimes scrolling or alt-tab would help. Sometimes a given top-level window would seem to become "poisoned" so all new tabs would be corrupt too.

I wonder how much of that is all the WWII vets being gone and not being able to hear their thankfulness at not having to invade Japan the hard way (after what happened on Iwo Jima and Okinawa).

I'm not aware of one, but it probably exists in some obscure language. I can describe how it should work though: * ideally, thread-local variables should not be directly exposed at all * variables intended to be dynamically scope

It's worth noting that `thread_local` does reduce register pressure. Unfortunately, almost no languages actually natively support the scoping that sane use of this requires.

Sure, excessive indentation is a code smell. But that doesn't impede the ability to read and track lines within a highly-indented block, which roughly follows the readability of prose and thus can use its numbers for comparison .

It's worth noting that most of those studies are for body text. To make that more directly applicable we should exclude indentation, but the additional punctuation (especially commas, but unfortunately no parentheses) also affects it.

The problem with notifications is always "deadlocks". Even without deadlocks it's common to accidentally create a loop that quickly starts using 100% CPU until you kill it. This isn't theoretical, e.g. I ran across it af

UDLs have one other huge benefit: you're far less likely to accidentally write a use-after-free, since otherwise there's no way to distinguish between being passed a string literal and being passed some other random char array. Be

The weirdest part about rwlock (not rust-specific) is when you end up using it in a case where the writes are the shared case and the reads are the exclusive case.

Hm, this makes me wonder: what exactly makes the European pig more harmful than the Polynesian pig which was there for ~1600 years? Is there a viable way of breeding pigs more like the latter?

It doesn't feel like it since there hasn't been much improvement in the latter range of time. At least Windows 7 could claim that it resolved most of the permissions bugs that came from upgrading security to 1970s standards, so it
