I never said it's wrong, I just said I don't understand it. I think my post sounds a lot less moralizing than the one I am replying to. On-call is not some kind of basic virtue. It is simply part of a job description, and that&

There are different ways of handling on-call and the practices at the companies you mention are very different, as is the on-call load. There is a world of difference between someone voluntarily accepting on-call as part of their duties in

It seems crazy to me that we don't even consider a calm and peaceful society as an available option. Those bad people are bad. How they got that way - who cares. Cue the downvotes. Canada doesn't need to pick either of these ex

I get it, I really do. This is an attack on our collective sense of security and it's close to home. The people who did this are in the wrong. But: do you generally associate a calm peaceful society with a lot of security or little?

There's another angle here too. Kids often force us to re-evaluate our own habits and improve. Here's what I mean. Imagine you are teaching your kid (OP: the kid can be imaginary, just imagine that you love them very much) abou

Chain got too deep to reply. We did adopt his methods, but many years and hundreds of deaths too late, and not before declaring him insane for his beliefs and putting him in an asylum. What I'm saying is that authority has a dark side.

As an engineer, sometimes I say "ship it!" to code that doesn't make me happy but works and solves a real problem. Edit: I meant this to go with debating techniques, not cures. There are people for whom no amount of saying &

Isn't this an example of some rigid and ineffective thinking patterns? Article publishes sound arguments, doesn't talk down to the audience, admits problems with appeals to authority... and converts a conspiracy believer! ...No wa

Unacknowledged overhead happens even with a PM present. Usually it's work that is absolutely critical to getting a project done but a PM would tell you it's a waste of time if you brought it up with them.

True. I think a child would benefit the most from an involved male and a female figure in their lives, but even one is better than none. In other words, ideally that should read "and a father" ;)

Most people associate tiger parenting with the "you must practice the piano or I will hurt you physically, emotionally, or both" mentality. The original tigress was also incredibly restrictive of who her kids could associate with

A child can be genetically loving, but beaten down by a poor environment. Have you never seen someone suddenly thrive after leaving abusive parents, bosses, or partners?

They are probably thinking H1, not green card lottery. Other than that, the answer to "why don't Canadians drive 3 hours south" is "they do". The brain drain from Canadian tech is real.

Yup. I have never driven a car where you have to double-clutch but I know they exist. Most people probably don't even know this and yet are still good drivers. They get out of driving what they want to get out of it. Not everyone h

Try reading "Panic Free" by Tom Bunn. It approaches the fear of flying from a psychological perspective, has concrete cookbook style suggestions, and definitely appealed to the engineer in me.
