And the phone manufacturers are also a year behind on updating older devices. The article talks about the new Android 2.2 being great, but there are still phones shipping with 1.5 and no firmware upgrades in sight. I realize there is no inc

The Dell Mini 10n comes with Ubuntu out of the box, which may be a consideration. I'd recommend getting something with a near-full-size keyboard, which means at least 10" screen. I picked up a used Acer Aspire One a year ago. It was cheap,

This is probably why most businesses offering proxies, newsgroup access, etc. have very shady looking websites :) That's the problem with such a business. You can't advertise "get Hulu from outside the US". You can only advertise "fast prox

You could run a proxy on a VPS. A basic Linode has 200GB bandwidth (which is the same as the monthly cap on my home connection). Tinyproxy is easy to set up. But this is an interesting idea for a service.

I think it's like the MS Office redesign. The new UI is supposedly better, especially for newbies. But the amount of bitching among experienced Office users was remarkable.

I think more like what FPGAs could have been. FPGAs today are generally used as a cheap way to implement an application-specific circuit. Once they are programmed, they stay in a fixed configuration. It is theoretically possible for the con

Hmm... I think not being a chump requires the ability to stop and reflect on the situation. We are in an industry obsessed with "ninjas" and "rockstars". The same author who wrote this article bashing long hours has articles about how grade

Also, many articles on startups assume the founders have no other responsibilities. Reality is a bit different. So yes, it would be great to hear more of these stories.

This is true of languages and libraries, but learning entirely new concepts is harder. First of all, one has to figure out what to learn, and then actually learn it.

Most cashiers hand my card back to me with the receipt to sign, and can't verify my signature. But many stores are now switching to using a PIN with chip cards, at least here in Canada. And Europe's had chip cards forever now. In fact, some

There can be workarounds, but using something that's not broken in the first place is better. Every one of those issues comes from other software expecting the spec (RFC) to be followed where it's not. Another thing I remembered after I pos
