There certainly are magic bullets. Look at any software engineer who has ever interned at Google. For anyone else, the hiring process is uncertain, chaotic, and basically random. Success is a function of your past performance, your appearan

A lot of the interest in mandating open standards, at least a few years ago, was targeted at the dominance of MS Office. That's interesting nowadays because: - MS Office's default file formats are open standards with open source l

Surface does have its fair share of bugs. At least in my experience (YMMV) the macOS bugs are more critical and often revolve around NVRAM, which somehow only breaks things for Mac devices. The newest and my personal favorite is a faulty fi

It sure would be nice if macOS worked as well as Apple was promising a few years back. My MBP is so buggy as it is with El Cap that I prefer to use a cheap surface 3 for anything other than dev work. Every time Apple releases a macOS update

Its not so much about programmers needing to know the numbers. Its more about programmers needing to know what L1 cache is, the idea that some operations are faster than others, etc. I know a lot of web dev type people who have no idea how

Email is an amazing tool. I don't understand the rush to get rid of it. It is a free standard with many implementations on both the client and server. It is exceptionally easy to manage email. Many servers have great systems for catego

Although I have mixed feelings about Dropbox's approach on Mac, there is one key difference to the Windows implementation that makes the situation incomparable: Windows explicitly provides APIs for file badges and other extensibility f

It sounds like wherever you work/live there is a pretty toxic dev culture. Software development is primarily about managing complexity. Think about the mountain of abstraction after abstraction between your "new new thing" an

The other part of my comment I didn't write because I thought it would basically be evident without spelling it out: problems like poverty and income inequality aren't solved by tech innovators. The actual problems that do exist i
