I'm a CS undergrad, and I'm working building software in the 'real world' for the summer. There's no way they could teach this kind of experience in the classroom or with projects. I like the idea of OSS work as a course requirement, but th

Now that Apple is rejecting apps from huge software companies (even business partners in the case of Google), they're destroying the credibility of the platform. The technology and tools they provide developers are first class, but the incr

I'm working on an app to track work orders for a client. Not exactly riveting, but it's my first real gig and it feels really good to get paid to program.

I think this is going to quickly turn into a game of chicken. Who can afford to annoy their users more with software updates?

The point that really drove home with this presentation was the malleability of Ruby. Rails really has made a web dev DSL out of Ruby. Rake has done the same for automation, and I think you'll soon see MacRuby become an exceptional DSL for

I think the work this guy is doing to make programming more accessible for kids is just as refreshing as his odd ball sense of humour. He does remarkable work.

There has been a lot of hubbub about Nielsen's comments lately, but it isn't the first time I've seen this. http://letsfreckle.com/blog/2008/12/calamity-howlers/ describes why the freckle team decided to show the password. I think that it

Who else thinks this would make for a great iPhone port? I really hope Lucasarts jump on that. It did great things to revive Myst.

Jeff Atwood gets a ton of flack on here for his blog content, but what he, Joel, and the rest of the Stack Overflow team are creating an incredibly valuable resource (especially for the type that frequent HN). Props.

What is taking a toll is this fear of change. Texting isn't going to ruin our kids, the same way the Internet didn't ruin our parent's kids. Pure FUD.

Doesn't this seem really, really low? Most of the non-iPhone phones out there don't have an easy way of purchasing/installing apps, and the market share of the iPhone is so large that I would think this number would be _much_ higher.

This is similar to what Carl Mercier did with ajaxwhois.com He talked this year at meshU in Toronto, maybe Wordoid could get some ideas from his experiences? http://www.slideshare.net/cmercier/how-i-founded-bootstrappe...

The 'Pattern' option on the side of the page is confusing. When you type in a pattern, it isn't apparent that you should click the 'Go' button at the top left of the page. Furthermore, when you type in a pattern and click 'Go', the default

Absolutely my favourite bit of Ayn Rand. This speech can single handedly change the way people think about money and their own worth.
