This is well described. Nix is fundamentally a different way to manage an OS compared to almost anything out there. While I think the ideas behind it are revolutionary and is the right way to build infra, the UX and organic growth of it mak

I've never used nix-env on NixOS. I really think that command only exists as a bridge for people used to more traditional OS's. I think there is a space for it - if you don't want to spend time building your user configuratio

It's simply not true. Install Ubuntu or Fedora, run Gnome 3 and everything "just works". You can't use Arch as an example here - it is intentionally very basic, and takes a lot of effort to learn as you do almost everyth

I shouldn't expect a widely used standard (USB Audio) to work after upgrading my hardware? All the Windows and Linux machines I've had have no problem with USB audio and I don't expect they ever will.

I've had many issues with OS X audio on Catalina - all of my USB audio devices skip and pop on it. It's also a pain to configure, with options bizarrely hidden in the MIDI app. Windows probably has the best audio stack of them all

Condensed fonts are really great for coding. It was one of my own personal revolutions when I swapped to one. It lets me put a lot more text on the screen without wrapping - and I find it much quicker to scan and read. I highly recommend tr

This is a very good point. There seem to be a non-trivial number of dyslexic engineers out there (I've worked with at least 3-4 over my career), and they struggle a lot to write - although they'll hide it out of cultural taboo. Th

I think this is very common for tmux usage in general. I think the reason is that terminals seem to benefit the most from tiling WMs, as generally their own internal window management is quite lackluster and you usually want to open many te
