Yeah but what if the physical switch gets manipulated? I think if you're that paranoid you need to keep your macbook in a vacuum so it can't pick up any sound.

Even their lowest level of premium support is pretty good. I think the higher levels have phone support.

Yeah, I find it weird that nobody else can use those cable networks, unlike the phone lines, or build their own. Perhaps those subsidies should have included more strings. Or maybe it should be easy to run cables.

I think a more fundamental skill these days is figuring things out. For instance, a test where you actually have to google for the docs to something and figure out how to use it might make more sense. The idea that "serious programmin

That sounds a lot more appealing to me than the government actually building the thing. With the EM spectrum for instance, the unlicensed 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands have been pretty useful. Google actually tried to get the 700 MHz spectrum (in

I think it makes a lot of sense. I can download the Windows version of an app and double click on it and it runs. As opposed to I double click on it and it's all "oh you don't have a JRE" or "you have the wrong JR

There seems to be an idea that some ways of telling your computer what to do are too foppish and that if you are serious about it you use a language from 40 years ago. Of course that's probably what the assembly programmers said about

Why don't they just combine the JRE and JAR file? Then I can be sure it works when I download it.

Does Spanner talk to Bigtable? From reading the paper, I thought it was built directly on Colossus.

Sure the robots can pick items out of bins, but can they wait in a 30 minute long security screening line at the end of their shift?

There's a similar one in Kyoto at the JR Rail station that is very nice with 8 styles of ramen, all in different little sit down restaurants with ticket machines: http://www.insidekyoto.com/kyoto-ramen-koji

This strikes me as an amazingly rational approach to build vs buy. Including trying to estimate the entire cost. A solution you build yourself costs more than just the time of the engineer to build the first version, the work revolving aro

My understanding of the NIMBY thing is it's either: A) keep everything the way it is so that things don't change for me or B) keep everything the way it is so that my home value goes up. The arguments you use to enact a NIMBY str

This is what I've done in the past, not sure why we need to "hack TCP" to get zero downtime. As an additional thing I do rolling deploys where I just create an entirely new VM and add it before removing the old one. This jus

I've seen some pretty impossible to comprehend or debug uses of templates. Perhaps my favorite, which represents most of the pitfalls you can create with C++ is the Boost library. And of that, the shining star is this page: http:&#x

A docker container is basically statically linking your binary one level higher. Rather than just including the libraries, you include all the support files and other processes. A VM is then like the next level above that.

Yeah, REST is nice for some things, but for normal APIs, you're calling them from a programming language, so calling remote functions (RPC) is very similar conceptually to calling local functions. You might not be able to guess the pa
