All but a few of those are sleeping, waiting for some event to wake them up. Your mac laptop would soon run out of battery and the fan would be screaming all the time if there were 100 processes just spinning around all the time.

I don't know what you're running on all those VM's but I very rarely have more than one or two cpu's utilized at once even though I have some VM's running. Sure, a lot of cores doesn't hurt, but usually they don't help either.

What's happening in the signed case? Signed division and modulo have been redefined in newer C/C++ standards. He talks about writing C but the syntax looks like C++ 11? at least i don't think he means the C "auto" here.

It seems to me that on the IP level the net has been in a technological paralysis for some time. We can't get RED or IPv6 deployed, and and the IETF doesn't seem to get anything useful happen these days. edit: anyone else remember when laye

Yes, and the OS readahead also helps. You can see the random vs sequential difference in any ssd review, eg http://thessdreview.com/our-reviews/ocz-vertex-3-240gb-max-i... shows 18 MB/s in random reads vs 500 MB/s sequential reads.

There's been some invisible barriers for compilers to start reorganising data and not just code. It would seem to me that side has even more potential than semantics preserving code optimization that takes data layout as a given.
