Check out Noisebridge, a primarily hardware oriented hackerspace. The general fantasticness of whoever is there when you show up will blow your mind.

TryRuby.org and Why's Poignant Guide to Ruby are good foundations for Ruby. Then RailsForZombies.com is a completely browser based interactive tutorial for Ruby on Rails, from there I too would recommend the Rails Tutorial which just got a

Reason #1 to root and jailbreak anything: If you can't open it then you don't really own it. You have to make things yours or companies will continue to lease you their products for outrageous sums of money. So do it for justice. Plus all t

To each's own. But you will pry my ThinkPad running Archlinux from my cold dead hands and the first eight of you to try will be bludgeoned to death with it. The ninth will have a perfectly functional, if cracked, laptop.

tl;dr: Don't take security advice from organizations whose job is spying on you. I don't know about anyone else. But the NSA is one of the last organizations I'd let give me security advice. I wouldn't put it past them to purposefully omit

The first step is to identify a problem. Find some pain point in your life and try to address it using Ruby. Some of these may crash and burn but you'll learn a lot from each one.

I ordered one! For a robot that can run around and talk $100 isn't bad at all. Only thing that weirds me out is the constant tethered power source. But I'm sure that can be hacked around if it hasn't been already.

I find the beta group to be really good for WakeMate. There is always the risk of new bugs as well as new features. If you're super super fussed about your data, I'd say stay away but it's rare to see a regression. Big issue for me was it w

I voted lighthouse because that's what we use at Nowmov but for personal projects I use [Bugs Everywhere]( http://bugseverywhere.org ) It's a simple command line tool that syncs to a file in your software's repo. Simple + Portable = LOVE.
