Great article. More cross cultural knowledge and appreciation is sorely needed!

It's very difficult to overcome an airgap. How could society reorganise around that? Going back to sneakernets?

I look on things from a game theory perspective. Is worrying about the problem helping you to solve it? Usually the answer is no, but what does help instead? I find that bisecting the issues involved is a good start. It's practically i

The timestamp in the article of 1684335272 is oddly familiar to me. 16777216 is the maximum value you can store in 24 bits, but imagine if asus were storing the fractions of a second (0-100) in an 8 bit number, packed together with epoch se

The article claims that a super intelligent AI won't make careless mistakes. Where's the evidence to suggest that? At present if an AI hallucinates that's dismissed as a failure of the AI's programming, rather than a mis

He isn't saying that. Only that different approaches are needed to produce better results. If he's confident to say this I think he must have something up his sleeve.

FastCGI would be better than regular CGI. Spawning and cleaning up processes is expensive.

Management earns the big bucks because they are supposed to be accountable. If the expectation is that software engineers should be accountable and not management the money should go to the engineers instead.

This blog post is referring to the same accidental complexity that Fred Brooks did in his classic 'No Silver Bullet' essay. Overly complex tooling remains a problem today.

I too look forward to being able to tackle larger projects in the future with AI. However, I don't trust sending my code to a third party over the internet so would want to host any AI I use locally.

I've never even seen a LED bulb that wasn't 2700K. Also, do some bulb packs not list the incandescent equivalent wattage in addition to the Lumens?

Programmers haven't been doing hand coding for a long time already. But for any system to be useful it must be consistently modifiable without introducing regressions and it must be possible to confirm whether the desired functionality

From my perspective, this is merely an opinion piece without much scientific evidence to back up those opinions. While personally I believe chatGPTs responses aren't particularly novel or reliable, the same can be said for most people

Interesting point. The fact the GPT-3's training data doesn't have samples of birdsong in it is down to the OpenAI engineers not feeling it's important to put any in. So it's still limited by human cognition in that way.
