I admit I was also thinking arena allocator the whole time I was reading that. I think it would work rather well since you are building up a tree piece by piece.

When is Java getting value types? It has been talked about forever now.

Yeah I'm not a game dev and don't write anything with low latency requirements. Almost all my code is in the "thoughput" camp.

I'm glad you found tools/languages that work for you. Kotlin felt a little too much like Java to me. If I stuck with a JVM lang. I'd probably go back to Scala 3, but I just don't like the JVM as a user (just sucks too ma

I keep toying with the idea of creating one. :-) Borgo looks neat - hadn't seen it before.

The problem with languages is they don't compose. Iow, one missing feature needed automatically invalidates the language entirely. Swift is targeted at Apple platforms and cross platform is an after thought. Kotlin targets JVM and whil

As much as I love Rust I sometimes wonder if I'd be more productive in a simpler language. If I wrote it every day I'm not sure that would be true, but as a hobbyist coming back to Rust sometimes takes me a bit to get back in the

Everyone talking about unit tests, and testing in general as a thing to achieve are missing it entirely. Tests aren't a thing to achieve, and talking about whether unit testing, mocks etc. are better or worse without context is pointle

I get their argument on reading code in less than an IDE environment (ie. book), but in general, I think _limited_ type inference is good (on classes/structs and functions). Not having local variable types is a net positive in general,

If you delete your interface files and then change the type used when calling a function it can cascade through your program and change the type of the function parameter. For this reason, I generally feel function level explicit types are

Agreed, it seems weird to me to avoid garbage collection in a high level language. It is one thing to use escape analysis to avoid creating garbage, but mallocing every object is going be slower than a well tuned GC.

Yes, but languages don't compose well. For example, you can't take Swift because you like all the things the language does and then add in first class support for Linux and Windows. Thus, anytime a language doesn't align with

I like the idea, but please no "async/await". In a higher level language green threads like Go has are the correct answer IMO (and I'm not a Go fan, but I feel they got this part right). Gradual typing is interesting, bu

I only skimmed this article, but is it fair to say if this makes it into Rust proper that we would gain self referential structs?

An allocator and deallocator go hand in hand. For the JVM, most of the GCs are compacting so they can use bump allocators. In that case, yes, it is a solved problem. However, it depends on the alloator/deallocator pair and traditional

Do a lot of companies actually fire people via email? That seems very cold! Most of the companies I've worked for they will call you into a meeting with your boss and HR and then have security walk you out after gathering your things.

Why is it different from any other software just because it is a shell script? Do you read the kernel sources for your OS before running it? Your web browser? My point is not that we should blindly run things, but that we all have criteria
