http://news.ycombinator.com/newest The submissions go there first, and bubble up to HN main page only if they get enough upvotes. This kind of question is pretty useless as a poll, if pg shows actual statistics I think it would be pretty

The assumption is there is no good reason for the US to default, as it can always print more dollars and pay debt with them. In contrast, Greece can't print euros by itself.

It's not just the data, it's also what you do with it. I think a typical social network is a reasonably good fit to the relational model. But this is mostly because any given user cares only about his friends, and at most about the friends-

This is not a very useful statement, because there is no clear-cut border between relational and non relational data. You can map everything to a relational schema and to most nosql models.

For the startups to be less of a commodity, perhaps you could look for some sort of unique perspective on the world that founders should have. It seems Google founders had a lot of that. This may not help with the returns though; maybe more

I only know Tarsnap, and it is a backup service, not quite useable for "file transfers" and sharing. There's a fundamental tradeoff between security and convenience, and Dropbox is on a sweeter spot than the high-security offerings.

Awesome work! Can you normalize it against total text volume? Number of mentions always goes up with time as HN grows, % of posts mentioning will be a better measure of mindshare.

PG says the first iteration doesn't matter much as long as the founders are good and iterate quickly. Empirically, is this the case? Airbnb and Dropbox certainly didn't iterate on their concepts that much. Google's first shot was excellen
