I agree completely that better price discovery would help the issues greatly. Many times the doctor's office will not even be able to tell you how much a procedure or medication costs until after you get it, which is nuts. If there wer

Apartments don't have to be cramped, they can be spacious, and they don't have to be noisy, if you build them with thick walls. So the question becomes: why aren't we building more apartments like this? City living (at least

If many countries near Russia prefer to align themselves with NATO and the west, how will violent behavior from Russia improve the situation? It seems like it will do the opposite.

>Russia can do whatever they like to their people. This is a callous viewpoint. My heart goes out to the Russian citizens living in an effective dictatorship.

As an American: I agree with your point broadly, but I would love to see the world punishing Americans e.g. through sanctions for an event like the invasion of Iraq or Vietnam, should it happen. Such unnecessary destruction of human life sh

There's a famous scene in the movie "The Big Short" where a character is talking to a stripper about her investment properties. The movie is about the 2008 housing bubble.

Big difference between millionaire and centi-millionaire or billionaire though. You can save a million dollars just by making the median American salary and making large contributions to your 401k over 40 years, due to the power of compound

When wordle first started to rise in popularity, I saw a lot of comments that the one-a-day format was too limiting, and people would get bored and forget about the site because one puzzle doesn't offer enough engagement. I think that

I'd be surprised if you see that Rust code is significantly slower than equivalent C code; this isn't how it pans out in most benchmarks. The killer for Rust is executable binary size, which even with no-std and other tricks can s

You can get these low interest rates because the government subsidises them. If it were a "free market" so to speak you would not be able to get such a rate, and possibly would not be able to get a fixed-rate mortgage at all.

IRC has quite a few active users which is not what I'd call "dead". It's true that it's not as ubiquitous as it used to be, but it certainly still fills a certain niche.

Just curious, what does that $700 buy exactly? My power bill and gas for my car combined never exceed $200. I assume it's a cost of living difference?

Propaganda does not benifit you. It benifits the state. To think that the state's goals are your own is a symptom of being poisoned by propaganda.

You won't find much support for an opinion like that on a site named "hacker" news, haha. A lot of backup services (tarsnap comes to mind) prioritize scriptability, as I imagine many people run backups from cron or a systemd
