I've used autotools on a ton of my projects, and I like it a lot. I can't speak to any of the problems you had. The one thing I'll say about Autotools is that the learning curve is pretty steep, and it took a fair amount of e

I wrote a lot of TCL code in 2015-2017, and it was better than I thought going into it. TCL has first-class lists and maps, and they're not string-based under the hood at all. It's true that TCL was "all string all the time&q

Site is hugged for me, so I can't check to see if the author addresses this. I've been wondering - wouldn't UBI tend towards an inflationary spiral? I'm sympathetic to the goals of UBI. But without price controls, what w

For the record, runit's code is in really bad shape. It uses deprecated APIs, and also hasn't been updated from K&R C. There are a number of type warnings on 64-bit systems. The build system cannot be used for cross-compilatio

I think it's great that the authors are working on this. RAII is one of the best things about C++, and I'm excited for similar functionality in C. GCC's __cleanup__ is a poor substitute for a fully-baked addition to the lang

I'd say say there's some truth to it, but maybe in an accidental way. Shell scripts have been part of UNIX since day 1. A lot of early UNIX commands were implemented as scripts, and shell was always intended to be one of the main

I could see that being true if we didn't have this two-party gridlock. In a world where D votes against R because "red team bad" and R votes against D because "blue team bad", it feels like we're watching our e

I'm referring to the Trump-ordered assassination of Qasem Soleimani. He was Iran's equivalent of the Secretary of Defense, and also a folk-hero to Iranians. Soleimani was assassinated by US drone strike in January 2020. Iran respo

Agreed that we need voting reform in the US, badly. It's also unlikely to ever happen, because the only ones with the power to do it are the ones that would be displaced.

That sounds like it's an issue if one is copying from an untrusted server, for sure. Maybe not an issue if you trust the machine you're copying to/from.

Scp works fine, I use it all the time. It's less complicated than sftp, and works basically just like the regular 'cp' command. It also doesn't require an sftp server to be present on the remote machine. I'm not 100

The instructions in this article should work, but they're more complicated than necessary maybe. If you don't have scp, you can usually just do something like this: ssh user@host cat remote_file > local_file to copy the

In addition to other's comments, C11 also gives you: - static_assert, for ensuring things at compile-time without ugly macros. - atomics, for use in multi-threaded systems.

A generic "build credit" term could be better, maybe - with some details about what one credit gets you. Maybe one build-credit is normalized to "One minute on an 'n1-standard-1' with 4GB of RAM and 40GB of storage.
