To argue to the extreme for a moment, one can have privilege, such as by way of relative wealth and power in society, and still hold views that powerful groups in society believe are contemptible. Holding certain views does not cancel out p

Exactly. As members of society we have an obligation to participate in society whether or not we are impacted negatively by its current shortcomings. In fact, the greater our privilege, the greater our obligation. Society would unravel if t

Neat, but fails in the same way Obsidian et al do: files are not a good abstraction for atoms of knowledge. What if knowledge isn't textual, or is only partially textual?

Forgive me, the focus you put on 'platforms v publishers' is reminiscent of the uninformed section 230 discussions happening everywhere right now, which are exhausting. Afaict section 230 isn't a special provision granted by

I'd imagine the case will be flimsy for the very reasons you bring up, but may be well-lawyered if Parler's funders (Mercers) have something out for Amazon. I'd much prefer important questions in society be brought up by the

Yes that's a great movie. Issues of speech though are a bit different than issues of anticompetitive behavior, I don't think an unsympathetic and probably incompetent litigant works as well in the latter.

Good point. I guess I'd prefer anti-competitive litigation in particular to be centered on arguments among those who compete. Parler wasn't exactly in direct or indirect competition with AWS. Might be better if another cloud provi

My fear: very real questions of antitrust are going to be litigated by a bunch of unsympathetic jokers like Parler with a flimsy case, like that guy who sued Facebook because they shut down his app that let users troll their friends photos

Lack of clarity on these actions doesn't do anyone any good. On issues of moderation judgment calls are almost always necessary, but in return they should be coupled with some transparency and clear rationale, else it looks arbitrary o

I completely agree with your point about the power and wealth imbalances in American society today regardless of race. We have growing wealth inequality and that is limiting opportunity relative to what we used to enjoy and is usually desta

At least when it comes to BLM vs Capitol there are three very important differences that far outweigh the surface level similarities: 1. Power - what happened at the Capitol was conducted by people who have enjoyed broad political power, wh

That might be the case for mid-2000s computers, but if you're looking at 80s or even 90s stuff, almost nobody is really using them for proper work. They're just too slow and inconvenient, despite being fun!

Your point about the 'invisible line' is astute. We're in a crisis of perception and reality right now, and this has caused many to lose sight of the very real lines that we have agreed upon to preserve society and democracy.

Thanks for the followup, just seeing this now. I think perhaps we're not on the same page about the central hypothesis. 1. Is nationwide crime up 2019 -> 2020? We agree, yes it is, and quite a bit! This link, as well as previous one

Homicides nationwide are well off of historic highs [1]. The Vox link you previously posted shows the large spike (+~30%) being 2020 related. The 21.8/100k you cite for St Louis in 2003 was also abnormally and suspiciously low, as 2002
