Worth noting this article is almost a year old now (Feb 2021), prior to Flutter 2.0 which supports web-based apps with CanvasKit. Flutter was only officially (1.0) launched 3 years ago.

Space Debris is peak nostalgia for me. I've been transferring my little library of amiga mods from one computer to the next since 1991 and Space Debris is one of the best tracks of the format. I remember even trying to use Space Debris

Since 1993 SAT no longer stands for 'scholastic aptitude test'. It had its roots as a sort of IQ proxy but that has fallen out of favor because it doesn't reflect the full purpose of schooling (e.g. advancement from given mea

Crazy fact: the Bering Strait is only 100 to 165 feet deep (~45m). 45m x 88km length = 4,000,000 m^2 times whatever thickness. Makes sense the strait is shallow given the whole prehistoric migration, but in my mind it was much deeper, proba

To the public it was groundbreaking, but it is worth noting the ideas in both MacDraw and MacWrite were already approaching a decade old by that point, having first been on the Alto (Bravo and Markup) and later in house on the Lisa (LisaDra

Web 1 had a lot of ideas that failed because they were too early, not because they were inherently bad ideas. Not sure if Metaverse will work exactly like SL did, or if its even the right idea, but it certainly will have a larger audience a

Likely ongoing teething issues with M1? It's a big lift to move an OS to an entirely new architecture, and haven't seen or heard of the same on Intel.

Actually, it is. This is an adaptive clinical trial, meaning its part of the protocol to change when pre-set criteria are met. This is stated in the paper. There's a whole body of work on the ethics and statistics of adaptive clinical

Population and individual stats are different though. If someone is older and in a higher risk group, the drug could indeed reduce hospitalization risk for that individual much more than 5%, while for other low-risk groups it could do nex

The idea of the 'reverse Trojan horse' reminds me of the later fate of OS/2, which shipped with such good Win 3.1 compatibility that nobody felt the need to build native OS/2 apps. The Jonathan is probably my favorite Ap

C’mon we’re almost two years into this, how is it we’re still under this idea that it’s about individual risk, and hospitalization (or death) is the only meaningful risk factor? A pandemic is a population-level problem, risk is dependent on

Fully agree, HN is absolutely not the place to get insight on population-level experiences with tech (or most anything else population-level; my pet peeve is people generalizing their education experiences). These population-level problems

Agree emotions are critical to understand as they're often signals for deeper unmet needs. RAIN is a great method for understanding emotions.[1] But sometimes, emotions are also just learned reactions, with little of value underneath.

"Motion before emotion" is a great little mantra to get you started on whatever - waking up, exercise, writing, working, etc. Emotions are sometimes helpful, but in the case of starting things they're usually wrong.
