You're right; we should do a better job of communicating this. Right now, you have to click on the invest button to see the terms, and to further complicate things, many of the startups use the YC VC Fund Note, which delays the setting of

That's my bad. I should have segmented the list to exclude people who were certified as unaccredited. I forgot to do that in the rush of things. I'm sorry for the tease!

We plan to have quality over quantity, so I prefer to see it as democratizing access to investment opportunities. Previously, only the rich even heard about the best investments. We think all Americans should have the opportunity to inves

That is correct. The SEC was told by Congress to implement the entire JOBS Act in January 2013, but they are behind schedule.

Unfortunately, the consequences are too severe to disregard the law. The threat of SEC action will blow up the financing of any startup that raises money illegally.

We used state blue sky laws to take a limited number of unaccredited investors legally. We felt it was important to eat our own dog food, and so went through the extra legal hassle. https://wefunder.com/post/16-how-to-legally-crowd-invest

We'll have a self-service platform which founders can use to fundraise privately. We make it easy to accept investments in about 3 minutes with automated legal docs, e-signature, and ACH payments. But it'll always be highly curated for feat

That might be more of an issue with Techstars than being a solo founder (I've been through Techstars as a solo founder. I'm also a YC alum). Techstars has lots of talks, sessions, and pitch practice. YC has almost none of that - one dinner

Thank you for sharing this. Words really can't express how this article made me feel... but it's rare for something I've read on HN to cause me to take a step back and reflect on what's important in life.

It was $10,000 for 16 people. 10 days. Food and private chef included. That's about it for amenities. You can find great places on http://homeaway.com/

We were surprisingly productive - I create most of escapist.me there. I'd usually wake up at 7am sharp (to the smell of bacon), do something active like waterfall rappelling until around noon, then work until 8pm. But no amazing companies

It depends on how fancy of a place you want to get, and if food is included. Last time, in Costa Rica, we had 16 people in a $4 million dollar mansion with a private chef preparing all our meals. It cost about $10,000.

If you are an accredited investor (i.e., make over $200,000), current law allows you to invest any amount you like. If you are not an accredited investor, you likely can't afford to invest $30,000... so the thinking goes in Congress.
