The DC term is always at the lowest spatial frequency (DC.) So, if you plot your FT so that the DC term is in the middle, then the DC term is in the middle :) It provides NO information about the varying levels, it tells you something like

"One problem with academia is the malice of the new." Astronomy is different. The first telescope was built in 1600. Telescope technology hasn't changed much since then. The engineering has gotten better though -- we spend money to get a

I think this guy discovered the Most Important Hacker Lesson: Everything invented by man is easily understandable by man. Seriously. Isn't that what makes hacking fun? The moment where you realize that you could build everything around

You raise a great point, but consider a different viewpoint. epidemiological studies are based on complex systems, systems with many variables and non-linearities. Atoms are a lot simpler (ha!) Here's what I think is going on: a hot pape

Sounds like you're moving along quite nicely. I realized that I will not finish my PhD in time for the deadline, so it's been postponed 1/2 a year. At one point, I toyed with the idea of submitting, just to receive feedback, but thought

I asked all my academic friends, and I've come to the conclusion that it is a pedantic distinction. But it's useful to have two different words for the two separate concepts :)

Isn't it ironic that Peter Norvig touts this view, but works at google? I've heard that GPA/pedigree are one of the key decisions for hiring?

I can't say anything about CS, but in physics, these comments are spot on. The essay points out: "A Ph.D in the humanities is useful for one thing only these days, and that's being an academic." Ok, a phd in physics gives you more flexibi

Cool. 1) You need more units! Especially physical units, erg, joule, etc. 2) The interface is too slow on my mac camino browser. 3) Play a little with Frink. In terms of calculations, frink is awesome. However, the plotting and the sha

I assume, that YC prints out a stack of these applications and grades them on paper. Have the printouts ever looked like crap because of some weird browser thing? If so, is there any chance we could see how the application looks when it's

How advanced do prototypes have to be? For example, did loopt have a prototype? If not, how did they demonstrate their ability in embedded systems programming? If they did, did they bring in a hacked up cell phone?

Sounds like the beginnings of a startup idea :) I'd say my experience with HI is that it's typically best to go for customer service, as well as coverage. When I had Kaiser, it was excellent. Blue Cross/Blue Shield, typically, has excelle

Very pretty. I'm not sure who your audience is, but assuming its goal is to reach the widest audience possible, here are my comments: 1) When looking at a storm, only information about that storm should be displayed. When I looked at TS B

Safari is the same web browser that the iPhone uses. Because the site is optimized for the iPhone, it only needs to work on Safari. Anyhow, I tried the app out, and I can't decide if it's really useful.

Funny, I've been thinking about a startup that would hold several gigs of data per user (the first set of data would live on S3.) First thing I did was write a simple monte-carlo code to determine the average and +- 1\sigma cost per user.

Is there any particular reason for such an implementation? I think the answer boils down to this: http://paulbuchheit.blogspot.com/2007/06/wasting-time-on-things-that-really-dont.html (This is not meant to be a nasty sounding response.)
