I and others who've frequented HN for many years find that the quality of the content has gone down, and the moderation of discussions has become more haphazard and arbitrary as a response to the influx of BS.

Its a difficult distinction to make. I don't think it unreasonable to expect some nuance on the part of moderators. My personal suggestion would be to remove subjective comments more readily in threads related to highly technical topic

To be fair its hard to know what merits censorship on Hacker News as well. Mods frequently remove posts that are inflamatory, political, "unsubstantive", and your very comment may well fall under their guidelines for removal.

Some do... in the form of scaling bonuses based on peer review, overtime used by salaried positions, and overall contribution to the company. Essentially a pool of money is set aside based on how well the company performed for that quarter.
