Completely agree. It shouldn't be treated as an excuse but it's silly to ignore this as a HUGE risk factor. Probably should be considered when making policies etc.

True. Damaged parents are often the kinds of people who are taken advantage of by sex offenders. I think it requires a social fix of some kind.

I've never used Arch but I can really get the vibe here. Wikis (especially toopical ones) are social media of sorts. There was a strong community around the #emacs IRC channel and emacswiki.org back in the day. About a 100 people who k

I can relate to this. Early social media were forum sites, boards, irc, mailing lists and things like that.

Tangentially related. The idea that scientific research operates in a vacuum uninfluenced by real world considerations in its relentless search for truth is a notion that a lot of scientism advocates put out. I've always found the idea

I think it was mostly familiarity. I'd been using Linux on thinkpads for so long that I had a few config files which for the tools I used. Mine was a very text heavy command line workflow. Mostly driven by the keyboard. Almost no mouse

I remember a panel once at a PyCon where we were discussing, I think, the anaconda distribution in the context of packaging and a respected data scientist (whose talks have always been hugely popular) made the point that he doesn't lik

I've been using Thinkpads exclusively from 2005 or so. My first was a T40 I got from work. Then I got a T42 of my own. I used it heavily till the fan gave out. After that, I got an X200 which I used for a long time. The keyboard got da

I don't think that works. The fact that it can produce different output for the same input, usage of tools etc. don't really fit into the analogy or mental model. What has worked for me is treating it like an enthusiastic intern w

I'm somewhere in between myself. Before LLMs, I used to block a few sites that distracted me by adding entries in /etc/hosts file to mapping them to 127.0.0.1 on my work machine. I also made the file immutable so that it woul

Fair enough. We can argue about the betterness of org but even if so, its enough better enough to push our something as popular as Markdown. The real item of value is org mode .

Org format is reasonably intuitive (so is markdown). But org's real power comes from org-mode and the rest of Emacs. Being able to use it as PIM, as a quick way to write documents and export them, as a way to take notes, the keystrokes

As a die hard old schooler, I agree. I wasn't particularly impressed by co-pilot though it did so a few interesting tricks. Aider was something I liked and used quite heavily (with sonnet). Claude Code has genuinely been useful. I

Isn't this suitable for a Bayesian classifier? Label some data (manual + automation using substrings) and use that to train a classifier and then it should be able to predict things for you fairly well. There's a new feeling that

Yeah. I recently stumbled across this in an interesting way. Went down a rabbit hole. I was recreating an old game for my education[1]. Scummvm supports Eye of the Beholder and I used it to take screenshots to compare against my own work. I

Parent of 3 here. It's not just possible. It's quite normal for young kids to be well behaved in public places without having an electronic baby sitter.

Very much agree. In the rush to "simplify" writing, we've stripped out a lot of the colour in the prose and made it boring. Sentences have a certain rhythm which becomes even more apparent when they're read out loudly or
