At least you’re good enough to work in software period.

Hah, someone a while back showed me a Jane Street job that was apparently writing/maintaining a ton of VBA. Really curious what the interview process for that job looked like.

I skipped it but I seriously regret it now. The work available to the uneducated is pretty sad. Even when I was still doing dev work, my career had a very different trajectory than friends of mine who went to school, mostly thanks to the op

Weird, that vast majority of jobs I see posted now (in my area of experience) are either from grifty third party recruiters or small random consulting firms. I see very few first part job postings by companies.

One of my friends saw a job the other day. It was a non academic, non R&D, run of the mill marketing position that required… a PhD???. The pay was also pretty pathetic with the start of the range probably not much more than a PhD stipen

I thought it was résumé collection. I’ve noticed a weird pattern lately, where I’ll see a job, apply to it, and a day or two later it’s delisted.

A mix of both. Some months I’ll get no interviews, some months I’ll get some. When I do get them, it seems a toss up whether I don’t get past the first round, or get through the final round then get ghosted.

I’d be happy to branch out, but if I can’t even get work in the stack I’ve been working in for some what, am I really going to be able to branch out after a few side projects in another?

I don’t even have an undergraduate degree. I’ve been wanting to go back for years, but I have bigger aspirations than getting a degree just to have a degree, and I don’t think I can fund it without software money.

Probably not. I don’t live in that state anymore. If I moved back I could probably get a state job, but I’m not exactly in a position to move right now. Also the benefits were not that great from what I remember. Ima few years in private in

It seems really bad right now. Companies seem particularly eager to filter out anyone that doesn’t match the job listing exactly right now. Every other job I see in my area of experience wants someone who’s has done a lot of work with their

I try to buy old stuff at thrift shops. You can get nice solid wood pieces pretty cheap.

Mostly I was looking trying to do custom RF stuff, trying to create custom hardware. Could have used an SDR, but I think I still would need a solid handle on the math for that.

I’m not so sure about that. Learning a programming language for example is pretty easy, iterative, and had quick feedback for me. Learning years worth of math makes my eyes glaze over. I do agree on the latter half though, regarding how the

OLE has always fascinated me. I’ve wanted to play around with it just to see what sort of cursed things I can do, but my eyes glaze over looking at WinAPI docs.

Yeah it’s absolutely bizzare to me. Even outside of tech I know friends who have been struggling for months. One of them has recently been complaining about how the only sales role they get an interview for turns out to be grifty MLM crap.
