Anything with probability and randomness tends to break my brain but I find it fascinating. If I interpret the 200-years-late solution correctly, it relied to a large part on trial and error (like one "trick" is to focus on adjace

The smaller the site (and the newer) the easier it is to comply. Don’t amass mountains of ad data and you’re fine.

But general purpose education isn’t „the real world“. I think the opposite argument is often made to justify teaching theory when it doesn’t seem to have many real world applications.

Now that you mention it, this super advanced AI project sounds like a failure of software standardization rather than a triumph of technology, lol.

Yea, that would have stumped me, expecting a trick/trap. What if my birthday is tomorrow? By the time my teacher checks it, it's wrong. "Your birth year" would have prevented that. This is a problem I have with certain p

The curves of false-acceptance vs false-rejection rates usually overlap, even in their optimum. I do not envy a billion-user-level website like Twitter having to deal with this. Automation is probably still better than trying to do this man

And, as the article says, in Japan! There has been some fair criticism of the Japanese games market lacking in innovation compared to the West. Their indie scene is pitiful, AAA games stuck in 90s mechanics with fairly boring use of moder

Is this a way for the EFF or something, to attack patent-trolls effectively? It seems too good to be true from the descriptions in this thread.

Good engineering is robust and efficient. Requiring Javascript to display simple, static text is not good engineering.

"JS disabled" is just the consequent, tech-y angle to not requiring JS to display every damn text box. I get JS to load things like simple menu-pop-ups or expanding an image, but it's so infused in the new reddit layout, you

I'm with you on the JS stuff, the redesign screams "I want to be an app!" so desperately, I'm seriously considering leaving after a good 8 years on the site as well. Everything has that Javascript-delay on it, like it ta

Does any of this translate to still images? How much better would it be compared to, say, a JPG? I assume somewhat better but it would have to be magnitudes to take over.

There's a point where "everyone for themselves!" doesn't quite cut it. The most obvious example is probably fraud. You could argue everyone must check whether a deal they get involved with is legit and accept the risks o

Interesting way to look at how inequality grows and IMO totally logical. It's scary as fuck, especially since China is on the verge of becoming very powerful on an international level.

It always saddens me how mathematicians seem to look down on “intuition”. Maybe higher math as a full-time job is just hard work and stubborn precision but for me, an intuitive, visual look is probably getting me closer to understanding tha

You know, it's gotta be said that Google just shitting all over copyright just because they're big isn't ideal, either. They should be honest about their motivations, though.

Hasn’t this been discussed to death? Since most algorithms are more or less pure math, there’s mostly only one way to do things efficiently. You also get quasi-standards that are copyrighted, which is not healthy for competition. Also MPEG2

Honestly, how many of those can someone juggle a day? I'd struggle with two yet still more show up every year. It's not big in the US, I heard, but for me it's 90% WhatsApp. MySpace used to be huge, then facebook came along.

It's more the fact that they hold a quasi-monopoly AND have severe interface flaws that are now "standard". If it was just one of the two, I think people would be more forgiving (see Adobe Photoshop/InDesign, which, whil
