Hmm, not sure about that. Taking a arbritrary threshold of $500k a year, I have friends who earn that on boards of FTSE250 companies - there are maybe 2,500 of those jobs just in the UK (10 per company). At the top end exec compensation hit

Thank you for posting this, it was well worth a read. While few of us can manage to be as dedicated to an ideal as RMS is, having an icon who is genuinely committed around helps keep us moving in the right direction. Certainly the web start

In the end a company is just another system and working out how to make it do what you want can be just as fun as programming a computer to do what you want :)

Rubbish (with one caveat). It is certainly possible to make change happen, even in huge companies. The caveat - you have to do it the right way, and make the most of your advantages. (Being a new graduate or studying something work related,

A nice one in the center of the city, yes. Not so nice, or not so central, and it can go down as low as $1k/mo. The most expensive one I looked at was 350gbp for a room ($700/week - $3k a month) but that place had it's own pool, which is pr

No kidding. A lawyer two years out of school will earn $128k in London, compared to an engineer two years out who will be on closer to $80k. With rent running at $2k+ a month for a double room in a shared house the difference is pretty sign

I played it for quite a while, which is really unusual for me (I generally get bored of a game after about 20 minutes.) There were a few factors for getting it: - My friends were going to play it. So I added my pre-order to the list. - It w

These small savings do matter, because they are low hanging fruit. Convincing people to turn a television off all the way (or better yet, making it automatic) has no downside with respect to quality of life. Not taking a bath on the other h

Even if spam never saw a financial return, there would still be spam. A lot of spam is purchased as a 'marketing service' by fools who _think_ spam works, who make a payment to a third party to spam on their behalf. As the failure happens a

One interesting compiler bug later and your comment could end up in an error message. Anyway I would only swear when I'm at home with a beer in my hand, so I only put swearwords in my code when I'm working at home with a beer in my hand ;)

I don't want to get junk e-mail from _anyone_. I always uncheck any preference boxes and it drives me wild when companies ignore that. Amazon seems to be a good citizen, but Expansys, AoC, Waitrose and a few others are persistant offenders.

I downvote for factual errors (such as 'Symbian is open source') because a high vote count implies that the comment is correct.

Symbian is closed source (and, as you say very popular and very good). The open source Nokia is looking to adopt is Linux, already seen on the N810. Nokia seems to be making the move to cut development costs. Nokia also doesn't just sell ph

Adding a co-founder may not speed things up, it is just as likley to slow things down, as good co-founders are hard to find. That said the time to do it is when the rate of progress dropping won't bankrupt you, and you have a chance to reco

Then why not submit the direct PDF link in the first place? Or is it a 'helpful' news.yc antifeature? (PDF readers actually load faster than scribed, provided you aren't using the vanilla Adobe one with all the plugins turned on.)

You frequently don't get what you pay for - there is very little correlation between price and quality. Take Drupal for example - cheap AND good. Compare with our new Mega Corp CMS which had a 7 figure price tag and a work flow so atrocious
