I was working for a big corporate when I had a start up idea. The route I took was to jump ship to a smallish start up for as long as it would take to feel comfortable (I figured around two years, it actually took a bit longer than a year).

If top-of-function comments like: /* Does everything required to initialise the UI (DO NOT CALL DIRECTLY - see class foo) */ Get outdated quickly (without being updated) you have big problems. Equally a one line comment before things like:

We generally pay less for phones than the US, we just pay it up front instead of over time. It's cheaper because we avoid paying interest and carrier mark up on what is essentially a loan for the hardware. You wouldn't think it was a good d

I'm afraid you are wrong about GSM network support. Integrated chipsets commonly have support for 4/5 bands and EDGE+HSPDA on board no matter what features the manufacturer turns on. In fact there are a couple of really cheap phones out the

You are actually describing (part of) a perfect market - a free market is just one without economic intervention and regulation by government except to regulate against force or fraud. (Thanks to Wikipedia for the description.) I would like

Plus you are probably in the process of running out of money and how long you get to tackle the problem(s) has more to do with cash flow than the state of the world.

I have been using Server Density (which is also free for one host - and more comprehensive in what it does) but this is much easier. Good stuff!

Thank you for the good wishes :) It's now 6 or so years later and I hope I have acquired enough skills to at least be able to make new mistakes rather than repeating old ones.

That's true of a lot of people in every profession though. We all know bad programmers who last read a book in 1992. I'd be surprised if the ratio of bad:good:great was very different in any field.

The irony is that for years Dixons have been the place that geeks go to try out laptops before buying them on the Internet. They obviously decided to pay it forward.

If that was on a CO flight to EWR that may have been me! (If I ever need a job I'm buying a round trip ticket with a 12 hour layover at IAH. Ruby's bar is like one rolling job interview for the extroverted who likes to travel.)

I agree with your conclusions but not your reasoning. It's certainly hard to write software, but I don't agree that writing software is harder than the non-technical work for a start up. Programming is deterministic (for a smart enough pers
