Not always. In C++ and Rust, in many cases the abstraction penalty is completely eliminated by inlining or by making an efficient concrete specialization. If this can be achieved the abstraction penalty is paid only in compile time.

Oh, come on: he had numerous examples from all over the world where the political implications are quite different. The author's view was simply that old political boundaries have lingering effects, and he demonstrated that very well.

My favorite is when a French colleague wanted to send some "demands" to a customer. He meant "questions", "demander" = "to ask", he didn't realize that "demand" has a very different imp

Nothing was posted in 1977. The web didn't exist until 1991; some sites might map to FTP archives older than that, but the first Sam's Club opened in 1983. and of course you know that...

It's difficult to maintain a peg when it starts to become unsustainable and the big players start to bet against you. Reminds me of when Soros took on the Bank of England and won: they were trying to peg the value of the pound using th

I'm skeptical of this argument. It has a surface plausibility, but I find it more useful to think like a scientist. Assuming that the hypothesis is true, what would we expect to observe? The claim is that that low interest rates are ca

Norway is in the European Economic Area, which allows for free movement of people, which is exactly the part that Brexiters hated the most. They aren't going to give that up. Switzerland is in the European Free Trade Association and pa

Alternatively, parts of the UK could break off and rejoin the EU (e.g. Scotland). I can't predict whether this will happen or not.

Norway is in the European Economic Area, closely tied to the EU. Switzerland isn't an EU member but is in the single market. That means both Norway and Switzerland are loosely attached to the EU bloc and play by most of the EU rules. T

Yes, this is exactly what I meant when I said that justices have switched sides before. I understand that there was a draft opinion overturning the ACA when Roberts switched sides, though I'm not certain how complete it was.

The issue is that the decision was not final; Chief Justice Roberts was still trying to persuade other justices to adopt a split-the-difference decision (uphold the 15-week law but don't kill Roe v Wade). Justices have switched sides b
